Back for a third year after PRAx-record attendance, the world’s only live-music-accompanied educational shark dissection gets bigger — and smaller! This year, OSU’s Big Fish Lab partners with the Little Bird Lab to stage a comparative anatomical study of sharks and birds.​

Adaptation and evolution are as much a part of music performance and music history as they are of natural history. We wrap the dissection in the rich sounds of the Afro-Fusion group Fikira. Led by Fiaindratovo (Mimy) Manavihare, a drummer and composer from the south of Madagascar, Fikira blends piano, bass, drums, percussion, trumpet, xylophone, mbira and vocals in the Malagasy language. ​

70% of the shark species in the oceans are endangered or threatened, and the purpose of Big Fish Fest is to create an environment where biology, conservation and human creativity meet to mutually reinforce our care for the planet and for one another. ​

From wildfire and floods to shifting growing seasons and rising costs, producers are not only facing financial and operational challenges — they’re also carrying immense grief, anxiety, and uncertainty.

This unique cohort-based training is designed for individuals who want to support producers by facilitating gatherings that provide space for education, processing ecological-related stress and grief, creating connection, and building resilience. Whether you are an agricultural advisor, extension professional, mental health provider, rural community leader, or producer yourself, this training will prepare you to lead supportive, culturally sensitive, and grounded conversations that honor the emotional toll of ecological changes and extreme weather on land-based livelihoods.

Participants will:

Learn accessible activities to help producers process their emotions related to ecological stress and grief and extreme weather.Strengthen peer listening skills rooted in empathy.Increase comfort and confidence in facilitating group discussions.Gain tools to respond and refer appropriately when more urgent or complex mental health needs arise.Explore personal reactions and feelings about mental health challenges.Build a supportive community with others who are passionate about the emotional and mental health impacts of ecological change and extreme weather.Contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of climate resilience, mental health, and agriculture.Receive a facilitation toolkit with Powerpoint presentations, speaker notes, links to producer videos and a mental health resource guide.Attend quarterly post-training support and check-in sessions.Who This Is For:

We invite anyone with a connection to rural communities and food systems who is passionate about supporting the emotional resilience of producers—this includes farmers, ranchers, extension agents, cooperative members, rural mental health therapists, conservationists, and others who work alongside land stewards.

If you have not yet taken the training to be able to deliver the 30-minute ecological stress and grief presentation, you will need to attend that training on Tuesday, Aug. 12 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. PT. Register in advance for this meeting.

Apply by Aug. 15.

We will be selecting approximately 25 people to participate in this first cohort. Please use the application form to provide your name, contact information, and answer some short questions. We will schedule brief phone or Zoom interviews with all applicants.

This workshop introduces participants to concepts and methods used to evaluate and prioritize fish passage improvement opportunities. Attendees will learn about aquatic connectivity, fish passage barriers, and a range of approaches for identifying restoration priorities. The workshop will also include an overview of decision-support tools and analytical methods used to assess habitat access, compare restoration scenarios, and support planning efforts. Through demonstrations, interactive activities, and hands-on exercises using real-world examples, participants will gain practical experience interpreting results and applying them to fish passage and watershed restoration decision-making.

Join OSU Extension and Engagement as we welcome Desiree Tullos for a presentation on the historic Klamath River dam removals, the world's largest river restoration project, completed in 2024 through the leadership of basin Tribes. She will provide an overview of the project and share lessons learned from OSU's collaboration with Tribal partners, highlighting the importance of reciprocity, trust-building, intellectual property, and adaptive approaches in conducting science that supports meaningful restoration outcomes.

Desiree Tullos is a professor in the Biological and Ecological Engineering Department at Oregon State University. Her research emphasizes the sustainable engineering and management of rivers by examining the intersections of hydraulics, infrastructure, ecology, and society. Her research program heavily emphasizes engaging and mentoring undergraduate students in research with societal relevance. She also serves on multiple boards and science and engineering advisory panels to help translate science into practice and policy.

Nearly 20 years ago, NEA Jazz Master and Grammy Award-winning trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra. His purpose: to preserve jazz traditions — including riff-playing, spontaneous group improvisation and collective New Orleans instrumental polyphony.

Marsalis has shaped music culture through related projects such as the ensemble’s now-famous Jazz at Congo Square Festival and Marsalis’ educational program, Swinging with the Cool School, an experimental form of music therapy originated at the Children's Hospital of New Orleans. Convocation is one of two seminal ceremonies that bookend the academic year. Whereas Commencement celebrates graduates, Convocation celebrates new Oregon State University students - in Corvallis and online. Each fall, the university welcomes new students at the New Student Convocation ceremony. Convocation, which literally translates to "come together," is a ceremony in which we welcome OSU's new students to the university. Ecampus students may participate via the live stream.

All university senior leaders, faculty and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend Convocation as guests. Join us for lunch at the MU Quad, cheer on OSU's incoming students from the sidewalk as they walk in the processional from the MU Quad down 26th Street, then find a seat in Reser Stadium for the ceremony. This workshop introduces participants to concepts and methods used to evaluate and prioritize fish passage improvement opportunities. Attendees will learn about aquatic connectivity, fish passage barriers, and a range of approaches for identifying restoration priorities. The workshop will also include an overview of decision-support tools and analytical methods used to assess habitat access, compare restoration scenarios, and support planning efforts. Through demonstrations, interactive activities, and hands-on exercises using real-world examples, participants will gain practical experience interpreting results and applying them to fish passage and watershed restoration decision-making.

Topic:

Quantitative sampling of animal communities that span the oceanic water column is central to understanding the dynamics of deep-sea food web structure, biogeochemical cycling, and resource management. Midwater communities inhabit Earth’s largest habitat by volume and include representatives from nearly all major marine animal phyla. Thus, fostering taxonomic expertise and developing sampling and laboratory methods to comprehensively describe these communities is key to drawing food web connections and assessing spatial and temporal dynamics in the sea. In the eastern boundary upwelling system of the southern California Current Ecosystem, we have been sampling and quantifying micronekton communities with a 10m2 MOCNESS between the surface and ~2,000 m to understand their horizontal and vertical dynamics. Across five annual cruises, we quantify community composition at seven stations within deep basins, the escarpment, and offshore stations along a ~700 km transect. We identified over 140 families of fishes, crustaceans, molluscs, gelatinous plankton and other invertebrates. This seminar will present preliminary results examining distance from shore as a proxy for environmental variability along our transect, looking at the effects of depth, sampling time, and station on community biomass, composition, and vertical patterns. To understand the connectivity of these communities across epipelagic, mesopelagic, and upper-bathypelagic depth horizons, we are also measuring stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of dominant species, migrators, and residents. Our goal is to refine our understanding of the ecological roles of deep pelagic animal communities and how these animals shape biogeochemical cycling and dynamically connect ecosystems.

Auditions for Oregon State University Theatre’s fall 2026 production of Let the Right One In will be held Sept. 28-29 at 6 p.m. in GVGC 106 on the OSU Corvallis campus (1701 SW Jefferson Way).

Let the Right One In tells the story of Oskar, a lonely teen, who finds a friend and kindred spirit when he meets Eli, a mysterious girl next door. As the two become closer, Eli can no longer hide her secret in this mysterious and enchanting vampire myth and coming-of-age story. The production is set in 1980, here but colder. This is a story about outcasts, bullying, and about how generations cannot communicate. It is a story about light and shadow. It is a story about blood. It is a story about the unexpected. There are also vampires.

Auditions are open to all and will consist of cold readings from the script. This play contains violence, blood, implied nudity, and adult language. Auditioners are strongly encouraged to read the script beforehand be honest about your own comfort level with intimacy, combat, implied nudity when filling out the audition form. The show will feature between 10 and 16 actors, some roles may be doubled. Actors will be cast based on fit for the role.

Auditioners do not need to attend to attend both days, although it is advantageous to do so.

Blum participated in the 38th Voyage of the Charles W. Morgan, the world’s last surviving wooden whaleship, as well as Arctic expeditions tracking climate change. A documentary, Frozen Obsession, was made of the expedition, for which she served as Arctic historian. She also ventured to Antarctica with Albatros Expeditions and traveled to the International Territory of Svalbard in October 2022 with The Arctic Circle. Blum writes about polar regions for Avidly and is the author of The News at the Ends of the Earth: The Print Culture of Polar Exploration. ​

Through her experience with polar science as a writer and literary historian, Hester Blum illuminates the creation of knowledge under extreme conditions. She is the Lynne Cooper Harvey Distinguished Professor of English and professor of environmental studies at Washington University in St. Louis.

Join us for a ground-breaking collaboration between Irish music icon Seamus Egan and lauded New York-based Scots-Irish harper Maeve Gilchrist. Using their common language of traditional Celtic music, Egan and Gilchrist explore one of the most extraordinary palettes imaginable: the Antarctic.

The pair immerse us into the world of Ernest Shackleton’s 1914-17 Trans-Antarctic Expedition through a myriad of traditional instruments alongside electronic manipulation, sound design, poetry and spoken word. Step into the environment of ice, camaraderie, austere beauty and human ego — all set against the backdrop of Europe in World War I and an Irishman far from home. ​

This concert is presented in conjunction with the Polar STEAM program.

In Encounters at the End of the World, Filmmaker Werner Herzog and cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger travel to Antarctica to meet the people who live and work there and to capture footage of the continent's unique locations. In his narration, Herzog explains that this film will not be a typical Antarctica film about "fluffy penguins" but will instead explore the dreams of the people and the landscape.

The film was shot in Antarctica as part of the same NSF Antarctic Artists and Writers Program. The entire film crew consisted of Herzog, who recorded all production sound, and cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger. The pair went to Antarctica without any opportunity to plan filming locations or interviews, and had just seven weeks to conceive the project and shoot their footage.

The freewheeling nature of the time in Antarctica meant that Herzog often only met the interview subjects minutes before beginning to film them.

Filming in Antarctica is usually overseen by the NSF's media office, which approves and supervises all film productions. Because of Herzog's grant from the Artists and Writers Program, however, he was allowed to film without any minders or oversight from the NSF. This allowed him and Zeitlinger to film the "seal-bagging" footage, which is not typically deemed suitable for public release.

Min Lin is a mom who looks like a 13 year-old boy. She is honest, warm, and absurd. Min has a husband and she looks like a husband. Min won Emerald City Comic Con and Best of Festival at Colorado Queer Comedy Festival . She represented Taiwan in the 45th Seattle International Comedy Competition and is named one of the 2026 Undisputable Champions of Comedy by the Stranger. What's more, Min has a past as an oceanographer, and we're thrilled to welcome her to the STEM Cabaret stage!

Jono Zalay began his standup career in Boston, while simultaneously earning his Doctorate in Neuroscience (he gave cocaine to rats). Since dropping his science hobby to pursue comedy full-time, Jono has done standup for The Late Late Show on CBS, Netflix is a Joke, LMAOF on OFTV, been named one of Comedy Central’s ‘Comics to Watch,’ hosted on E!, and earned international press for his pranks on the DMV. Jono now lives in Los Angeles where he performs and writes for TV, with his work airing on ABC, Hulu, Peacock, CNN & Prime Video.

Quesa D’Mondays (she/they) is a professional drag artist, producer, and actor living and working in Portland, OR. Known for her live vocals, quick wit, parody stylings, and unmatched charm, she has made a big splash in the scene since her debut in 2023. She is the host of Musical Mondays at Badlands PDX, and a proud member of the Gaybors Group's Drag in Demand. She is the current reigning Miss Gay Portland Pride 2026 with Pride Northwest, and is also the Paraoke! Comedy Showcase Champion 2025. Outside of performing and producing, Quesa utilizes her drag to make positive change in her community, running food drives, giving lectures on drag history, raising money for local organizations, and engaging with Oregon’s Queer youth.

Producer Naomi Fitter is a professor by day, comedian by night. She escaped from Ohio at the age of 22, and her soothing midwestern voice has been described as "sensual," "librarian-like," and "nearly inaudible." She runs sold-out science comedy shows around the country, and her comedy has been featured on NPR. Naomi’s autonomous robotic stand-up comedian, Jon the Robot, cannot pass a CAPTCHA challenge, but he does hope to capture your heart. Jon the Robot has been featured by NPR and TIME Magazine.

Sarah Hagen is a mostly normal person with an irritating obsession with mathematics. In an act of wild desperation, she began moonlighting as a stand-up comedian with the express purpose of incorporating mathematics into comedy. She holds a PhD in mathematics and tours all over with her hour on ancient Greek astronomy, Dork Side of the Moon.

Topic: The Ocean Identity Initiative is a collaborative research agenda developed in response to calls within the UN Ocean Decade to “restore society’s relationship with the ocean” and strengthen society-ocean connections. In response to this global priority, and in consideration of ocean program needs, the Initiative advances Ocean Identity (OI) as a novel construct for examining how individuals engage with, experience, and understand ocean environments through the lens of human identity. Drawing on interdisciplinary foundations in environmental psychology, identity theory, place connectedness, and marine social science, this research conceptualizes OI as a multidimensional construct encompassing the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of individuals’ relationships with the ocean. This presentation will highlight existing and ongoing Ocean Identity research projects, introduce emerging research findings and tools, and identify opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and sectors. The American Strings series kicks off its 2026-27 season with an artist whose on-stage interview with host Kelly Bosworth is sure to be as deep and wide-ranging as her musical impact. Born in New York City to Haitian emigrants and activists, Leyla McCalla finds inspiration from her past and present, making music that vibrates with three centuries of history and influences from around the globe.

McCalla possesses a stunning mastery of the cello, tenor banjo and guitar, and as a multilingual singer and songwriter, she has risen to produce a distinctive sound that reflects the union of her roots and experience. In addition to her solo work, McCalla is a founding member of Our Native Daughters with Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah and Allison Russell and an alumna of Grammy award-winning Black string band The Carolina Chocolate Drops. McCalla will perform a solo set following the interview portion of the evening.

Beginning with an ascent of a 200-foot-tall Douglas-fir with a bird biologist, Richie leads us from her home in Central Oregon into the ancient forests of Cascadia, a bioregion which rivals the Amazonian rainforest in significance for climate and biodiversity. Birds are guides to intricate and imperiled communities thriving at every level, from understory to midstory to overstory. They steer us to cool havens within multilayered, centuries-old groves that are critical refugia in a time of climate crisis. Their songs and flights show us what we must protect for the future of threatened birds, forests, and humankind. A narrative of perception change, memoir, and kinship, Feathered Forest is a soaring ode to birds and wild trees.

Richie spoke and collaborated with many Oregon State University-affiliated scientists and researchers for this book project, including those at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. At the event, Matt Betts from the College of Forestry will introduce Richie and researcher Nina Ferrari will share a short presentation about her bird research that informed the project.

Richie's previous books include Halcyon Journey, winner of the 2024 John Burroughs Medal, a National Outdoor Book Award (gold) and a Foreword Indies Award (silver).

Bowhead whales are the only baleen whale endemic to the Arctic. As such, they have numerous unique adaptations to living in the ice. Because of this habitat, they can be very difficult to study in below freezing temperatures and during polar night. However, novel tools, including passive acoustic monitoring, have given scientists a window into the dark icy world of the bowhead. This world is changing rapidly and declines in sea ice are changing the behavior of bowhead whales and introducing new threats and competitors into the Arctic.

Join host Joseph Dowd (Grand Ronde) and friends for a night of song sharing and storytelling. Contemporary folk songs about life as a Native American on and off the reservation will be interspersed with storytelling and poetry that convey the lived experiences of contemporary Native Americans in Western Oregon, as well as those of their ancestors.

Joseph Dowd is a descendant of the Santiam, Takelma, and Tututni peoples, and anyone else up and down I-5 in Western Oregon. From the Hudson and Dowd families of Grand Ronde, he has been blessed to have strong ears for the stories shared by his family, community, and life experiences, all of which have inspired him to put words to paper and song. Joseph is a 2026 Indigenous Place Keeping Fellow through the Grand Ronde Tribe's Art Program.

Programming for the annual Champinefu Series is curated by the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Cultural Resources Department with support from the Marys Peak Group of the Sierra Club, Spring Creek Project, Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, Corvallis Sustainability Coalition, and OSU's School of Language, Culture and Society.

We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios. Radiant is based in El Segundo, California.

Jaclyn Moyer and Liza Yeager, recipients of the 2024-25 Public Humanities Collaboratory Fellowship on Watersheds, worked together to create Ghost Forests, a kaleidoscopic audio documentary about Oregon’s disappearing ash forests.​

Moyer, a writer based in Corvallis, has been reporting on Oregon ash forests since the arrival of the invasive emerald ash borer in 2022. Yeager is an audio documentarian from Oregon and the co-founder of the award-winning audio magazine Signal Hill, named one of the best podcasts of 2025 by The New Yorker, The Atlantic and the BBC. Moyer and Yeager will share what they’ve learned about ash forests, sound and making an audio documentary that features characters and scenes from the Willamette Valley and beyond.​

Jaclyn Moyer is an author and journalist whose book On Gold Hill won the 2025 Oregon Book Award. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, High Country News, Salon, Guernica, Orion, Ninth Letter and other publications. ​

Liza Yeager is a documentary radio producer, writer and editor. In addition to her work on Signal Hill, she has worked for Invisibilia, Radiolab, Planet Money, New York Magazine, The Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Public Library, Marfa Public Radio, Oregon Public Broadcasting and The Dig, among many other institutions and projects.

Nrityagram, the land of red mud and birdsong, has been our home and muse. For over 30 years this land has nurtured us, and we have poured our sweat, dreams and art to its bountiful earth.

More than India’s foremost Odissi dance company, Nrityagram was founded as a village and a gurukula — a residential school — devoted to Indian dance. The ensemble’s daily life of intensive training and meditation is rooted in place while propelling them to

international prominence, including many awards and their two-time inclusion on the Best Dance of the Year list published by The New York Times.​

Nrityagram comes to campus as the holders of the 2026-27 OSU President’s Residency. They invite audiences to journey across time to witness KHAṄKHAṆĀ: the sound of dancing feet. The program features landmark pieces created over the last three decades by internationally renowned Odissi choreographer Surupa Sen. Join Nrityagram as they dance, celebrate and honor the red earth of their land.​

The residency, including reduced price tickets, is supported in part by the INTO OSU Joint Venture Internationalization Fund and by the President’s Excellence Fund.​

Steeped as a child in the traditional music of her country, virtuoso Maryna Krut plays the bandura — a Ukrainian string instrument with elements of both a lute and zither. Over time, Krut incorporated a wide range of influences into her playing, principally jazz, using the bandura both as a solo instrument and to accompany her powerful singing.

She has placed in the Eurovision Song Contest and gained a national following in Ukraine after appearances on her country’s versions of The X Factor and The Voice.​

But Krut’s journeys are not only musical. From her temporary home in the west of Ukraine, she travels to the front lines of the war to perform for soldiers. And now, on tours abroad, she brings the stories and cultures of Ukraine to the world. At PRAx, she will perform in the intimate, close-up environment of the Ray Theater to showcase the nuances of her instrument — banduras have as many as 68 strings — and the powerful, personal nature of her performance.

A sonic mesh of 1920s big band, New Orleans brass bands, Indigenous music and the sweetness of ’90s R&B, Quinn Carson’s complexity is moderated by the easy nature of his melodies.

Join us as he presents an impassioned evening of songs exploring the musical history of Indigenous tribes and their contribution to American music. Carson is a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma and the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma.

“Poetry and science are allies, not opposites.” — Jane Hirshfield ​

OSU is a hub for cutting-edge polar research. What does that research look like through a poet’s lens? For this unique program, we invited poets from around the country to submit a creative response to OSU's polar research papers. With a unique call-and-response format, polar scientists briefly introduce their research, and selected poets share their creative responses to research at the ends of the Earth. We also invite you to visit Notes on the Cold: Images of the Arctic and Antarctic, an exhibition in the Stirek Gallery featuring contemporary artists, writers and filmmakers exploring the unique conditions of the world’s polar regions.

The A to Z Duo brings together two towering figures of the classical guitar world: Italian virtuoso Aniello Desiderio and Croatian master Zoran Dukić. Renowned for their fiery technique, orchestral sound and poetic sensitivity, the A to Z Duo offers performances that reveal the guitar’s full expressive and virtuosic potential. Their repertoire spans Baroque transcriptions, classical and romantic masterworks and vividly rhythmic Spanish and Latin American music, alongside contemporary compositions written especially for them. ​

Many people are struggling with the consequences of environmental changes.

Farmers, ranchers and landowners have close relationships with places and landscapes and, as a result, are especially vulnerable to ecological loss. This program, presented by Oregon State University Extension Small Farm's faculty Maud Powell and mental health professional Zoe Rossing, will introduce participants to strategies for increasing resiliency in the face of extreme weather events and a rapidly changing environment.

Who?

This training is designed for agricultural educators who provide support to farmers and ranchers. Attendees may include Extension professionals, federal and state agency employees, private sector consultants, non-profit staff, and growers and producers.

Why attend?

Research indicates that providing opportunities to share emotions and mental health challenges about ecological change leads to greater resilience, increased connections within and between communities, and increased rates of positive/intentional action.

If you’re interested in taking a deeper dive, this workshop is a prerequisite for our cohort that will launch in the spring of 2026

What to expect?

During this live, virtual, three-hour training, agricultural educators will experience and learn how to deliver a 30-minute presentation on ecological stress and grief. Participants will receive a PowerPoint presentation along with notes and other resources on how to implement the presentation.

Funded through a Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant.

Ellen Waterston is an award-winning author and columnist who has dedicated herself to writing and advocating for the literary arts in the high desert region of Oregon, all the while continuing to write poetry and nonfiction works that have evolved into essential reading about Oregon and the West. She has published five poetry and four literary nonfiction titles, including We Could Die Doing This and Walking the High Desert. In 2024, Waterston was named to a two-year term as the 11th Poet Laureate of Oregon and received both the Soapstone Bread and Roses Award and the Stewart H. Holbrook Award. Waterston is the founder of the Writing Ranch and the annual Waterston Desert Writing Prize.​

Jeff Fearnside is the author of three full-length books and two chapbooks of poetry and prose, including the essay collection Ships in the Desert, which won a Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award and the Phillip H. McMath Post-Publication Book Award in Prose from the Arkansas Writers MFA Workshop. His story collection A Husband and Wife Are One Satanwon the Orison Chapbook Prize.

In this powerful, refreshing new look at the many ways prediction shapes our everyday lives, University of Oxford professor Carissa Véliz explains how putting too much stock in others' predictions makes us vulnerable to charlatans, con artists, dubious technology, and self-deception. Examining a wide range of subjects both personal and societal, including medicine, climate, technology, society, and others, Véliz uncovers a number of predictions about humans tend to be self-fulfilling; more data doesn't guarantee better outcomes; AI is more likely to increase risk than decrease it; and a free and robust society requires not more prediction, but better preparation.
Véliz argues in this incisive and bracingly original book that the main promise of prediction is not knowledge of the future, but rather power over others. Prophecy is an invitation to defy those orders and live life on our own terms.

And for the first time, all three presentations will feature a live performance. In winter, Hour for the Ears presents What Noises Remain, a work for solo performer, video, and sound co-created by Swendsen and Oslo-based percussionist Jennifer Torrence. ​

Join us in a darkened Ray Theater, with flexible seating including pillows and blankets, for this hour-long adventure that invites you to tap into your sense of listening in a way you never have before.
