Topic: At the breaking point: Antarctica's ice cliffs and the potential for sea level rise

The single largest source of uncertainty in projections of sea level rise is the speed at which the Antarctic Ice Sheet will retreat. Much of this uncertainty is related to the potential for towering ice cliffs at the margins of the continent—where the ice sheet meets the ocean—to collapse under their own weight in a form of iceberg calving. This talk highlights recent efforts to collect data from Antarctica's changing ice cliffs using satellite and ship-based field measurements, and the implications of these measurements for existing projections

ABSTRACT: Microbiome sequencing provides useful signals for studying host phenotype and disease, and the large amount of publicly available 16S rRNA sequencing data creates an opportunity to learn reusable microbiome representations through large-scale pretraining. However, learning across studies is challenging because the observed amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) often differ substantially between cohorts, making fixed-vocabulary approaches difficult to transfer to new datasets. This thesis presents a sequence-aware representation learning framework for 16S V4 microbiome data that avoids requiring a fixed ASV vocabulary for input representation by encoding ASVs directly from their nucleotide sequences using a pretrained DNA language model and combining these embeddings with abundance information. A transformer encoder then learns contextualized microbial community representations, which are used to produce sample-level embeddings for downstream prediction tasks. Across a curated set of disease and phenotype prediction tasks, including COVID-19 detection, abdominal conditions, and antibiotic exposure, the proposed approach improves over fixed-vocabulary and sequence-only baselines, particularly when training and testing data come from different studies. These results suggest that representing ASVs through nucleotide sequence while modeling abundance and community context can improve the flexibility and cross-study generalizability of microbiome-based prediction models.

Join us for the newly formed RSO: Research Computing User Group, a unified forum designed to bridge the gap between immediate practical needs and the future of high-performance computing at OSU. By combining the strategic vision of the Supercomputer and Me townhalls with the peer-to-peer expertise of the Bioinformatics Users' Group (BUG), RSO is the central hub for the university’s computational community.

Whether you are a seasoned engineer, a life scientist grappling with big data, or a student exploring AI for the first time, this is your venue to collaborate, learn, and influence.

Shape the Future (Huang Supercomputer): Prepare for the upcoming $25M AI supercomputer at the Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex. We are hosting working sessions to gather your input on hardware and software requirements to ensure the system—arriving in late 2026—is built to accelerate your specific research.
Solve Today’s Problems (Peer Expertise): leveraging the CQLS "BUG" model, we connect you with experts in the field. Bring your questions on SQL, Python, metagenomics, project management, or data storage, and find community-sourced solutions from colleagues who have already cleared the path.

Join us to celebrate a new book by environmental advocate and longtime editor-in-chief of Sierra magazine Jason Dove Mark that offers antidotes that everyone can use to resist ecological amnesia and make lasting progress to repair and revive a livable planet. In The Earth Said Remembe Me, he puts forth four simple but powerful rules for a life lived in communion with the Earth: Go outside. Bear witness. Make a record. Pass it on.

From the mountains of California to the lakes of Wisconsin and across the lush forests of his beloved Pacific Northwest, Mark shares moving examples of citizen scientists, birdwatchers, mountain climbers, and fishermen who are putting these remedies into practice. And he makes the case for easy, everyday practices that can help us “remember the earth” and support environmental conservation, restoration, and rewilding. Seminar Title: Advancing Solid-State Chemistry toward New Frontiers in Electrochemical Energy Storage

Seminar Abstract: "In the past two decades, solid-state materials chemistry has brought about an immense economic growth and societal development. The most notable example is the emergence of various materials for Li-ion batteries applications. After years of commercialized applications on a global scale, however, the field has realized that the current battery materials are far from perfect in many aspects. Such an issue is fundamentally rooted in the disconnection between the research of fundamental solid-state materials science and performance-driven materials development. In this presentation, I will demonstrate our research effort in pushing the scientific forefront of solid-state electrochemical energy storage. Specifically, we combine knowledge-based materials design, crystallography, and solid-state spectroscopy as a closely integrated approach to discover fundamentally new energy storage phenomena and explore fundamentally new energy storage materials. Results of the work will bring transformative insights for various subfields of solid-state science and relevant investigation of composition-structure-function relationship."

Speaker Bio: Dongchang Chen is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the University of New Mexico, since 2021. He obtained his B.S. in Chemical Physics at the University of Science and Technology of China in 2011 and his Ph. D. at Georgia institution of technology in 2017. Prior to joining UNM, he worked as postdoctoral researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. His research mainly focuses on 1. methodology development of solid-state chemistry, 2. understanding the relationship between electronic, vibrational, and electrochemical properties of solid-state materials, and 3. developing novel microscopic/spectroscopic tools for studying electrochemical processes.

The Advanced Asana Workshop is a challenging practice session designed for an athletic yoga practitioner without significant injuries or physical limitations. The class includes dynamic, flowing, and intelligently designed postural sequences to increase flexibility, strength, and balance, move internal energies, and progress toward the possibility of arm balances, inversions, backbends, and more. So-called "peak" postures will be explored in a conversational, educational, workshop-style format. As always, a range of props can be utilized and each person is encouraged to move with balanced effort, in a way that is uniquely wholesome, nourishing, and safe. This class is great for yoga teachers, aspiring yoga teachers, and those longing for deeper learning. Class will begin with a period of centering and close with an extended savasana.

Join us for the newly formed RSO: Research Computing User Group, a unified forum designed to bridge the gap between immediate practical needs and the future of high-performance computing at OSU. By combining the strategic vision of the Supercomputer and Me townhalls with the peer-to-peer expertise of the Bioinformatics Users' Group (BUG), RSO is the central hub for the university’s computational community.

Whether you are a seasoned engineer, a life scientist grappling with big data, or a student exploring AI for the first time, this is your venue to collaborate, learn, and influence.

Shape the Future (Huang Supercomputer): Prepare for the upcoming $25M AI supercomputer at the Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex. Many people are struggling with the consequences of environmental changes.

Farmers, ranchers, and landowners have close relationships with places and landscapes and, as a result, are especially vulnerable to ecological loss. This program, presented by Oregon State University Extension Small Farm's faculty Maud Powell and mental health professional Zoe Rossing, will introduce participants to strategies for increasing resiliency in the face of extreme weather events and a rapidly changing environment.

Who?

This training is designed for agricultural educators who provide support to farmers and ranchers. Attendees may include Extension professionals, federal and state agency employees, private sector consultants, non-profit staff, and growers and producers.

Why Attend?

Research indicates that providing opportunities to share emotions and mental health challenges about ecological change leads to greater resilience, increased connections within and between communities, and increased rates of positive/intentional action.

If you’re interested in taking a deeper dive, this workshop is a prerequisite for our cohort that will launch in the spring of 2026.

What to Expect?

During this live, virtual, three-hour training, agricultural educators will experience and learn how to deliver a 30-minute presentation on ecological stress and grief. Participants will receive a PowerPoint presentation along with notes and other resources on how to implement the presentation.

Dry‑farmed tomato variety trials exploring relationships between plant physiology, productivity, and fruit quality

Tomato drought‑stress trials evaluating how varieties respond to differing levels of water limitation

Variety trials featuring sorghum, cowpeas, corn, cucumber, cut flowers, and vegetable seed‑production plots, providing a broader look at crop performance in no‑irrigation systems

From wildfire and floods to shifting growing seasons and rising costs, producers are not only facing financial and operational challenges—they’re also carrying immense grief, anxiety, and uncertainty.

This unique cohort-based training is designed for individuals who want to support producers by facilitating gatherings that provide space for education, processing ecological-related stress and grief, creating connection, and building resilience. Whether you are an agricultural advisor, extension professional, mental health provider, rural community leader, or producer yourself, this training will prepare you to lead supportive, culturally sensitive, and grounded conversations that honor the emotional toll of ecological changes and extreme weather on land-based livelihoods.

Participants will:

Learn accessible activities to help producers process their emotions related to ecological stress and grief and extreme weather.Strengthen peer listening skills rooted in empathy.Increase comfort and confidence in facilitating group discussions.Gain tools to respond and refer appropriately when more urgent or complex mental health needs arise.Explore personal reactions and feelings about mental health challenges.Build a supportive community with others who are passionate about the emotional and mental health impacts of ecological change and extreme weather.Contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of climate resilience, mental health, and agriculture.Receive a facilitation toolkit with Powerpoint presentations, speaker notes, links to producer videos and a mental health resource guide.Attend quarterly post-training support and check-in sessions.Who This Is For:

We invite anyone with a connection to rural communities and food systems who is passionate about supporting the emotional resilience of producers—this includes farmers, ranchers, extension agents, cooperative members, rural mental health therapists, conservationists, and others who work alongside land stewards.

If you have not yet taken the training to be able to deliver the 30-minute ecological stress and grief presentation, you will need to attend that training on Tuesday, Aug. 12 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. PT. Register in advance for this meeting.
