Noon: Campus walk, from campus to downtown and back to the event (approx. 2 miles).

Sofya Gulyak made history in 2009 as the first woman to win first prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition. Since then, she has appeared around the world to great critical and public acclaim. She is praised for her “tremendous precision and coloration” by The Washington Post and “playing of great authenticity” by Gramophone. Gulyak is also an associate professor of music at Indiana University.

The Steinway Piano Series showcases some of the world's most exciting pianists on three memorable Sunday afternoons. Corvallis-OSU Piano International invites you to share their passion for the piano and its life-affirming repertoire as presented by some of the world's greatest artists.

The Fairbanks Gallery of Art at Oregon State University is pleased to present Vehicles, an exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Josh Callaghan. The exhibition centers on two newly completed sculptures, Big Rig and Death Drive (both 2026), alongside a selection of works spanning the last decade. These include Callaghan’s shoe mandala, Wormhole, Left (2023), a series of toolbox assemblages, Twig Indexes (2022-24), and a modified refrigerator, Monument to World Peace (2017). Taken together, Vehicles functions as a focused survey of an artist whose practice has long orbited the altered found object as an instrument of cultural critique, humor and poetics.

The exhibition’s centerpieces are two large-scale sculptures: a semi-truck and a covered wagon, each constructed using wheelchairs as their chassis. The collision of forms is immediate and loaded. Wheelchairs—objects already dense with associations of disability, health, healthcare, vulnerability, and mortality—are recast as icons of American mobility. The covered wagon conjures the ideology of Manifest Destiny; the semi-truck, the infrastructure of contemporary commercial life. Posed together, Big Rig and Death Drive trace something like a compressed arc of modern American movement.

Wormhole, Left, Callaghan’s shoe mandala, is a wall-mounted arrangement of found shoes organized by size, from infant to absurdly large adult, suggesting an evolutionary sequence - a lifetime captured in a moment. Callaghan’s Twig Index’s stage a quieter tension: found toolboxes filled not with tools but with meticulously arranged twigs. The gesture is comic and melancholic in equal measure, a parody of the human impulse to categorize, systematize, and domesticate a nature that ultimately refuses containment. The tools have been stripped of their function; what remains is the taxonomy itself, the grid of incremental human logic imposed on material that exceeds it. In the context of Vehicles, these works rhyme with the wagon and the truck: each is an artifact of a civilization that mistakes its systems of order for mastery.

A recurring formal preoccupation runs through the exhibition beneath its conceptual surface: tubes. The wheelchair frames, shower grab bars repurposed as exhaust pipes, and oxygen tanks all return to a fascination Callaghan has traced across his practice for years. Tubes and cylinders are, he notes, evocative of the body itself: fingers, limbs, the infrastructure of a human form. In Vehicles, they also become conduits—for movement, for meaning, for the passage of time. The title holds this openness deliberately. A vehicle is a thing that carries: bodies, cargo, history, ideas. Callaghan’s objects do all of these things at once, and invite the viewer to sit with the weight of what they haul.

Bellhop (20s-30s) - A hotel employee who works in the kitchen. The real killer with an avenging rage. Also has an unhinged side.

Sam- (Mid to late teen, any gender) Sam is not the sharpest tool in the shed and a heavy procrastinator. They get confused easily and often do the opposite of what is supposed to be done.

Riley- (Mid to late teen, any gender) Places heavy importance on performing well and does not handle misinterpretation or misunderstandings well. Gets frustrated easily and is a being filled with anxiety and high expectations.

A Hollywood executive is faced with the seemingly common task of reviewing a writer’s story for production. However, the tiny quirk is that the writer in question is none other than William Shakespeare and the story in question is none other than Hamlet.

Receptionist (any age any gender) - Zane's receptionist who has worked for them for many years and thus is no longer surprised by anything weird about showbiz
Zane (age 20-30 any gender) - A Hollywood executive who is a business person in a creative field. The only goal is to make the big bucks
Shakespeare (young adult-25 masc presenting)-the William Shakespeare (I want to see your ideas)

Rehearsals for individual productions leading up to tech will be scheduled by the directors, so please bring your schedule to the audition. All company members must be available for company run-throughs starting at 6:00 pm May 24 and running May 23-25 starting at 6:00 pm, tech rehearsal May 30 starting at 12:00, Tech/Dress May 31 starting at 12:00, Tech/dress rehearsals June 1-3, and all performances June 4-7. All company members will participate in strike immediately following the closing production.

The tech/dress rehearsals and performances will be at The Lab Theatre in Withycombe Hall (2901 SW Campus Way Corvallis, OR 97331).

The Road to Gate-All-Around CMOS Event Speaker

Alvin Loke, Senior Principal Engineer at Intel

Event Description

Despite the much-debated end of Moore's Law, CMOS scaling still maintains economic relevance with 2nm gate-all-around SoCs (Intel 18A) already in high-volume manufacturing since January 2026. Area scaling extensively driven by design/technology innovations co-optimized for primarily logic scaling continues to offer compelling node-to-node power, performance, area, and cost benefits. In this tutorial, we will start with a walk through memory lane, recounting a brief history of transistor evolution to motivate the migration from the planar MOSFET to the fully depleted FinFET. We will summarize the key process technology elements that have enabled the finFET CMOS nodes, highlighting the resulting technology characteristics and challenges. This will set the stage for transitioning to the nanoribbon gate-all-around device architecture and unveiling the magic of how these devices are fabricated.

Speaker Biography

Alvin Loke is a Senior Principal Engineer at Intel, San Diego, working on analog design/technology co-optimization for Intel’s gate-all-around CMOS. He has previously worked on CMOS nodes spanning 250nm to 2nm at Agilent, AMD, Qualcomm, TSMC, and NXP. Alvin received a BASc from the University of British Columbia, and an MS and PhD from Stanford. After several years in CMOS process integration, he has since worked on analog/mixed-signal design, focusing on a variety of wireline links, including chiplet IOs, design/model/technology interface, and analog design methodologies. Alvin has been an active IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) volunteer since 2003, having served as AdCom Member, CICC Committee Member, Webinar Chair, Denver and San Diego Chapter Chair, as well as JSSC, SSCL, and Solid-State Circuits Magazine Guest Editor. He currently serves as the VLSI Symposium Secretary, SSCS Global Chapters Chair, and again as SSCS Distinguished Lecturer. Alvin frequently speaks on CMOS technology and its impact on analog design, having authored invited publications including the CICC 2018 Best Paper and short courses at ISSCC, VLSI Symposium, CICC, and BCICTS. His publications have received over 1900 citations to date.

WOMAN: Also late 20s, full of eccentric neurotic energy.

Beer Girl

Bob creates the perfect woman out of beer cans. Beer Girl. Flo tries to talk Bob out of a relationship with Beer Girl. But in the end love wins, and they all learn a thing or two from Beer Girl.

Roles:
BOB: (20s M) Down on his luck, good for nothing that is looking for genuine connection.
FLO (20s F) Bob’s feisty partner. Their relationship is on the rocks.
BEER GIRL (Any Gender) - A humanoid figure made out of beer cans.

Murder by Midnight

A hotel-detective on the last 10 minutes of his shift is ambushed by a woman to solve a case.

Roles:
Dick Piston: (30s M) A hotel detective for a 5-star hotel. Not very good at his job. He is an asshole.
Woman (20s-30s) - A newly married woman who is in the hotel for her honeymoon. Plays innocent but is actually cunning. Conspired in her husband's murder and has an unhinged side.
Bellhop (20s-30s) - A hotel employee who works in the kitchen. The real killer with an avenging rage. Also has an unhinged side.

Abbott & Costello

In this new take on Abbott and Costello’s famous comedy skit “Who’s on First,” two teenage performers try, rather unsuccessfully, to rehearse a scene for their drama class. What they succeed in performing is a hilarious scene full of wit and comedic miscommunication.

Sam- (Mid to late teen, any gender) Sam is not the sharpest tool in the shed and a heavy procrastinator. They get confused easily and often do the opposite of what is supposed to be done.

Riley- (Mid to late teen, any gender) Places heavy importance on performing well and does not handle misinterpretation or misunderstandings well. Gets frustrated easily and is a being filled with anxiety and high expectations.

The Chocolate Affair

A woman hides in a motel room to conceal her secret, when two unexpected visitors confront her.

Beverly (mid-20s-30s F) - A kind mother with a sweet tooth and a bit of a pathological liar.

M&M: (Any gender) A douchebag, sleezy human red M&M

A Hollywood executive is faced with the seemingly common task of reviewing a writer’s story for production. However, the tiny quirk is that the writer in question is none other than William Shakespeare and the story in question is none other than Hamlet.

Roles:
Receptionist (any age any gender) - Zane's receptionist who has worked for them for many years and thus is no longer surprised by anything weird about showbiz
Zane (age 20-30 any gender) - A Hollywood executive who is a business person in a creative field. The only goal is to make the big bucks
Shakespeare (young adult-25 masc presenting)-the William Shakespeare (I want to see your ideas)

Rehearsals for individual productions leading up to tech will be scheduled by the directors, so please bring your schedule to the audition. All company members must be available for company run-throughs starting at 6:00 pm May 24 and running May 23-25 starting at 6:00 pm, tech rehearsal May 30 starting at 12:00, Tech/Dress May 31 starting at 12:00, Tech/dress rehearsals June 1-3, and all performances June 4-7. All company members will participate in strike immediately following the closing production.

The tech/dress rehearsals and performances will be at The Lab Theatre in Withycombe Hall (2901 SW Campus Way Corvallis, OR 97331).

Across the 1850s Pacific Northwest, American invaders hungry for land committed a host of atrocities, including multiple acts of genocide. Within a generation, pioneers and the historians who loved them covered up most of the crimes that had made Illahee into Oregon and Washington—but hidden evidence from the archives, Euro-American upstanders, and Native witnesses have kept enough stories alive to see the outlines of the horror. Professor Carpenter is an associate professor at the University of Jamestown in North Dakota and the author of The War on Illahee: Genocide, Complicity, and Cover-Ups in the Pioneer Northwest (Yale University Press).

The Graduate Writing Center offers writing circles for accountability, feedback, and professional development purposes to graduate students and post-doctorates. These small groups meet weekly online or in person with a GWC Consultant to discuss work they are doing, get feedback on that work, and write silently together.

Writing circles are a great way to set aside time regularly to develop your skills as an academic and as a professional in your grad program. These circles are conducted in an atmosphere where you can consult your peers and writing consultants for support, advice, and feedback.

Circles meet in person at Heckart Lodge or over Zoom depending on your preference.

40,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Description: Much of what we have learned about the ocean comes from making challenging observations at sea. For years these were made from ships by lowering sampling bottles and sensors over the side and down into the ocean depths. We now use autonomous underwater vehicles to explore the ocean, mapping subsurface distributions of temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen, among a growing list of ocean parameters. I will describe how we got to this point, what these measurements are telling us about the ocean, and how this knowledge helps us to chart a sustainable path forward to benefit from all the ocean has to offer.

Following the lecture, Dr. Barth will sit down with Dean Tuba Özkan-Haller for a moderated Q&A with the audience.

Topic: “Hierarchical Science”: How effective data synthesis can better inform management

Integrating habitat restoration with hatchery, harvest, hydropower, and climate drivers has long been considered the “holy grail” of effective salmon management, and can help managers move beyond habitat-only strategies to better understand tradeoffs among recovery actions. This talk highlights a “hierarchical” approach to data synthesis in the Nisqually River Delta that uses restoration monitoring data, salmon life-history information, and climate scenarios to better inform habitat restoration and salmon management. We draw from detailed monitoring and bioenergetics data to connect restoration actions directly to juvenile growth, survival, and fishery outcomes

Making Waves: Reflections on the Transformation of the Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory into a National Shared-Use Facility for Coastal Research, Education, and Outreach

Description: I will share highlights of key moments, decisions, people, and collaborations that shaped the evolution of the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory from a university lab into a nationally recognized, shared-use facility. I will discuss how, through the support of two decade-long NSF programs, we accelerated access to large-scale facilities, fostered data sharing, and created opportunities for multi-investigator, multi-institutional research aimed at understanding and reducing societal risks from tsunamis and hurricanes. I will also explore how expanding access to the lab for OSU undergraduates, K–12 students, and the broader public has strengthened our impact, fostered a new generations of coastal researchers, and increase awareness of and solutions for coastal risk. By sharing these experiences, I hope to provide insight into the opportunities, challenges, and unexpected rewards of building a collaborative research environment.

Following the lecture, Dr. Cox will sit down with Dean Forrest Masters for a moderated Q&A with the audience.

Inside Next-Generation Batteries: Materials and Interfaces

Abstract: Batteries are indispensable components in modern society, enabling applications ranging from portable electronics to electric transportation and grid-scale energy storage. Despite the commercial success of lithium-ion batteries, further improvements in energy density, lifetime, and cost require the development of next-generation battery components.

This seminar will focus on cathode materials, which largely govern the achievable energy density of lithium-ion batteries. Layered oxide cathodes remain a key chemistry due to their high theoretical capacities. Over the past decades, this family has evolved from conventional layered oxides to lithium-rich materials and, more recently, newly discovered structural variants. I will discuss how redox chemistry and structural stability dictate the performance of these cathodes through mechanistic insights enabled by advanced synchrotron-based characterization techniques accessible at national laboratories.

In parallel, growing interest has emerged in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries for higher energy density and improved safety. However, the fully solid and mechanically constrained nature of these systems introduces critical challenges at solid-solid interfaces, particularly between lithium metal and solid electrolytes. I will present our recent work on developing an in situ technique to directly visualize lithium plating and stripping processes on sulfide solid electrolytes, complemented by post-mortem analyses to probe interfacial chemistry. Overall, this talk aims to demonstrate how mechanistic understanding, supported by state-of-the-art characterization, advances applied battery research.

At the heart of Charles Goodrich's poetry is a quest for a deeper sense of community with the land, the weather, and the waters of his chosen home. Members of the natural world — insects, birds, plants, humans and other mammals — conspire with him in the journey. Sly, quirky, infused with wry humor and a contrarian spirit, his poems go in pursuit of what Thich Nhat Hanh calls "interbeing," the interwoven interdependence of all things. With their nuanced and varied themes of building and making a home, love of family, and kinship with all creatures, these are, in Clem Starck’s words, "the musings of a latter-day Zen gardener."

Knot House brings together a generous selection from four earlier volumes with 30 new poems. Readers discovering Goodrich's work for the first time will feel they've met a new friend, while those familiar with his work will revel in finding fresh aspects to this multilayered poet.

Goodrich will share work from the new collection, and the reading will be followed by a book signing. Grass Roots Books will be on hand with copies for sale.

This 45-50 hour course is designed to help aspiring kayak instructors improve their teaching abilities, while adhering to the ACA’s golden standard of excellence.

The course is divided into 2 components: The Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). The exam happens concurrently with the development portion of the class in the form of giving presentations and providing demonstrations. Performance is also evaluated with regard to paddling ability. Simulations of rescue scenarios, and kayak instructional situations will also be used including a 2 day simulated kayak school, taught and designed by the kayak instructor candidates.

Rate:
Students = $150
Community Members = $500
To finalize your registration and secure a spot on the course, you must pay at the Cascades Adventures office (RESH 118). You must pay no later than three business days after your initial registration on Bend Beavs Central or you will be taken off the registration list. Abstract:

From cell membranes to the sticky tongues of frogs, the natural world is rich with complex biointerfaces. This talk will highlight surface analytical methods developed to determine the structure and organization of biomolecules at these interfaces. With these tools, we will investigate the surface phenomena governing how muscle cells repair plasma membrane damage. The discussion will then expand to recent experiments uncovering the structures of biomolecules that drive wet adhesion in nature. Finally, we will turn to future experiments aimed at understanding the biophysical interactions between microplastics, their physiological environments, and the human tissues they encounter.

Biography:

Joe Baio is an Associate Professor of Bioengineering in the School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University, where he has been a faculty member since 2013. His research and teaching span cell biology, biosensor technology, drug delivery, and materials science. He holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Washington and completed his postdoctoral training as a National Science Foundation Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research.

The course is divided into 2 components: The Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). The exam happens concurrently with the development portion of the class in the form of giving presentations and providing demonstrations. Performance is also evaluated with regard to paddling ability. Simulations of rescue scenarios, and kayak instructional situations will also be used including a 2 day simulated kayak school, taught and designed by the kayak instructor candidates.

That’s what drives Oglala Lakota Sioux chef Sean Sherman, founder of The Sioux Chef, to revitalize Indigenous food systems and celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Native communities. His menus are inspired by the seasons and the land, using only ingredients native to North America.

Sherman’s Minneapolis restaurant, Owamni, opened in 2021, showcasing Indigenous foods and culture with a majority Native staff. The following year, Owamni won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America. In 2023, Sherman was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and received the Julia Child Award for culinary activism and innovation.

The Fairbanks Gallery of Art at Oregon State University is pleased to present Vehicles, an exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Josh Callaghan. The exhibition centers on two newly completed sculptures, Big Rig and Death Drive (both 2026), alongside a selection of works spanning the last decade. These include Callaghan’s shoe mandala, Wormhole, Left (2023), a series of toolbox assemblages, Twig Indexes (2022-24), and a modified refrigerator, Monument to World Peace (2017). Taken together, Vehicles functions as a focused survey of an artist whose practice has long orbited the altered found object as an instrument of cultural critique, humor and poetics.

The exhibition’s centerpieces are two large-scale sculptures: a semi-truck and a covered wagon, each constructed using wheelchairs as their chassis. The collision of forms is immediate and loaded. Wheelchairs—objects already dense with associations of disability, health, healthcare, vulnerability, and mortality—are recast as icons of American mobility. The covered wagon conjures the ideology of Manifest Destiny; the semi-truck, the infrastructure of contemporary commercial life. Posed together, Big Rig and Death Drive trace something like a compressed arc of modern American movement.

Wormhole, Left, Callaghan’s shoe mandala, is a wall-mounted arrangement of found shoes organized by size, from infant to absurdly large adult, suggesting an evolutionary sequence - a lifetime captured in a moment. Callaghan’s Twig Index’s stage a quieter tension: found toolboxes filled not with tools but with meticulously arranged twigs. The gesture is comic and melancholic in equal measure, a parody of the human impulse to categorize, systematize, and domesticate a nature that ultimately refuses containment. The tools have been stripped of their function; what remains is the taxonomy itself, the grid of incremental human logic imposed on material that exceeds it. In the context of Vehicles, these works rhyme with the wagon and the truck: each is an artifact of a civilization that mistakes its systems of order for mastery.

A recurring formal preoccupation runs through the exhibition beneath its conceptual surface: tubes. The wheelchair frames, shower grab bars repurposed as exhaust pipes, and oxygen tanks all return to a fascination Callaghan has traced across his practice for years. Tubes and cylinders are, he notes, evocative of the body itself: fingers, limbs, the infrastructure of a human form. In Vehicles, they also become conduits—for movement, for meaning, for the passage of time. The title holds this openness deliberately. A vehicle is a thing that carries: bodies, cargo, history, ideas. Callaghan’s objects do all of these things at once, and invite the viewer to sit with the weight of what they haul.

The Graduate Writing Center offers writing circles for accountability, feedback, and professional development purposes to graduate students and post-doctorates. These small groups meet weekly online or in person with a GWC Consultant to discuss work they are doing, get feedback on that work, and write silently together.

Writing circles are a great way to set aside time regularly to develop your skills as an academic and as a professional in your grad program. These circles are conducted in an atmosphere where you can consult your peers and writing consultants for support, advice, and feedback.

Circles meet in person at Heckart Lodge or over Zoom depending on your preference.

This 45-50 hour course is designed to help aspiring kayak instructors improve their teaching abilities, while adhering to the ACA’s golden standard of excellence.

The course is divided into 2 components: The Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). The exam happens concurrently with the development portion of the class in the form of giving presentations and providing demonstrations. Performance is also evaluated with regard to paddling ability. Simulations of rescue scenarios, and kayak instructional situations will also be used including a 2 day simulated kayak school, taught and designed by the kayak instructor candidates.

Rate:
Students = $150
Community Members = $500
To finalize your registration and secure a spot on the course, you must pay at the Cascades Adventures office (RESH 118). You must pay no later than three business days after your initial registration on Bend Beavs Central or you will be taken off the registration list. She reports the sexual assault and the perpetrator is arrested and prosecuted. Years later, he appealed the conviction claiming that they had consensual sex. The Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction and the perpetrator was released. A statement from the Court argued that because the victim was wearing very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was not sexual assault but consensual sex.

Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. This protest was picked up by international media which inspired the California Senate and Assembly to do the same on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento.

Patti Occhiuzzo Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, saw this in the media and thought everyone should be wearing jeans to protest all of the myths about why women and girls are sexually assaulted. Denim Day in LA was born. The first Denim Day in LA event was held in April of 1999, and has continued annually since.

Topic: The Science of Data: Leveraging new and upcycled approaches to gain scientific insight from complex datasets

Most scientists and researchers engage in at least some aspects of data science in their regular research workflows, but what is data science, and what–exactly–does a data scientist do? I began as a data scientist with NOAA Fisheries in late 2024, among a small cohort who were the first ever formally hired to this role at NOAA. I will talk about some of the various scientific and unscientific projects I worked on during my PhD and postdoctoral research that prepared me for this new role, as well as the diverse datasets, from aquatic microbiomes in the Pacific Northwest, to evapotranspiration in the agricultural Midwest, to wildfire history across all eleven Canadian provinces, that prompted me to pursue a career in data science. I will share some of the joys and challenges of data science work, what drew me to it, and some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I hope that you will come away from this talk with a fresh perspective and some ideas about how you might leverage data science techniques to advance your unique research.

Dynamic and Multicolor Electron Microscopy Abstract: Electron microscopy (EM) and optical microscopy provide complementary windows into biology and materials. But combining ultrastructural resolution with molecular specificity—and doing so for dynamic processes—remains a central challenge. I will describe two complementary efforts to extend EM into a multicolor and time-resolved imaging platform. First, I will present cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, in which an electron beam locally excites light emission with nanometer-scale confinement, enabling far‑field spectral readout while preserving EM resolution. I will discuss our work using CL to probe energy transfer in single lanthanide nanocrystals. I will also show that widely used organic fluorophores exhibit robust CL with spectra closely matching their fluorescence, establishing them as practical “cathodophores” for multicolor biological labeling. I will then outline our ongoing efforts to translate CL to 3D imaging of cryogenic specimens, enabling multicolor EM reconstructions of cells and tissues with full ultrastructural context. In the second half, I will focus on capturing biological dynamics by cryo‑vitrifying specimens at defined time delays following stimulation. I will cover key physical and engineering constraints that limit vitrification depth or complicate ligand delivery, and describe next‑generationcryo‑vitrification tools we are developing to address these bottlenecks. In particular, I will introduce a new time‑resolved high‑pressure freezing approach designed to pair controlled ligand stimulation with deep vitrification. I will close by discussinghow we are applying this new tool to visualizing the formation dynamics of biomolecular condensates with nanometer structural detail and millisecond temporal resolution.

The Fairbanks Gallery of Art at Oregon State University is pleased to present Vehicles, an exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Josh Callaghan. The exhibition centers on two newly completed sculptures, Big Rig and Death Drive (both 2026), alongside a selection of works spanning the last decade. These include Callaghan’s shoe mandala, Wormhole, Left (2023), a series of toolbox assemblages, Twig Indexes (2022-24), and a modified refrigerator, Monument to World Peace (2017). Taken together, Vehicles functions as a focused survey of an artist whose practice has long orbited the altered found object as an instrument of cultural critique, humor and poetics.

The exhibition’s centerpieces are two large-scale sculptures: a semi-truck and a covered wagon, each constructed using wheelchairs as their chassis. The collision of forms is immediate and loaded. Wheelchairs—objects already dense with associations of disability, health, healthcare, vulnerability, and mortality—are recast as icons of American mobility. The covered wagon conjures the ideology of Manifest Destiny; the semi-truck, the infrastructure of contemporary commercial life. Posed together, Big Rig and Death Drive trace something like a compressed arc of modern American movement.

Wormhole, Left, Callaghan’s shoe mandala, is a wall-mounted arrangement of found shoes organized by size, from infant to absurdly large adult, suggesting an evolutionary sequence - a lifetime captured in a moment. Callaghan’s Twig Index’s stage a quieter tension: found toolboxes filled not with tools but with meticulously arranged twigs. The gesture is comic and melancholic in equal measure, a parody of the human impulse to categorize, systematize, and domesticate a nature that ultimately refuses containment. The tools have been stripped of their function; what remains is the taxonomy itself, the grid of incremental human logic imposed on material that exceeds it. In the context of Vehicles, these works rhyme with the wagon and the truck: each is an artifact of a civilization that mistakes its systems of order for mastery.

A recurring formal preoccupation runs through the exhibition beneath its conceptual surface: tubes. The wheelchair frames, shower grab bars repurposed as exhaust pipes, and oxygen tanks all return to a fascination Callaghan has traced across his practice for years. Tubes and cylinders are, he notes, evocative of the body itself: fingers, limbs, the infrastructure of a human form. In Vehicles, they also become conduits—for movement, for meaning, for the passage of time. The title holds this openness deliberately. A vehicle is a thing that carries: bodies, cargo, history, ideas. Callaghan’s objects do all of these things at once, and invite the viewer to sit with the weight of what they haul.

This 45-50 hour course is designed to help aspiring kayak instructors improve their teaching abilities, while adhering to the ACA’s golden standard of excellence.

The course is divided into 2 components: The Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), and the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). The exam happens concurrently with the development portion of the class in the form of giving presentations and providing demonstrations. Performance is also evaluated with regard to paddling ability. Simulations of rescue scenarios, and kayak instructional situations will also be used including a 2 day simulated kayak school, taught and designed by the kayak instructor candidates.

Students = $150
Community Members = $500
To finalize your registration and secure a spot on the course, you must pay at the Cascades Adventures office (RESH 118). You must pay no later than three business days after your initial registration on Bend Beavs Central or you will be taken off the registration list. Strong yoga flow is a challenging class, yet a "moving meditation," designed for an athletic yoga practitioner without significant injuries or physical limitations. The class includes dynamic, flowing, vigorous, and intelligently designed postural sequences to increase flexibility, strength, and balance and move internal energies. Movements include vinyasa-style sun salutations, arm balances, inversions and strengthening of the whole body. A range of props will be offered and each person is encouraged to move in a way that is wholesome and nourishing for them. General prerequisites to fully engage in the class include: the ability to kneel, bend knees, employ downward facing dog, bear weight on the hands, and perform a push-up with knees down. Having general competence and confidence in the Marigold flow yoga class is a good place to start.

Abstract:

Despite increasing global awareness of climate change, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions remain a major contributor to global temperature extremes. The continuous rise in carbon emissions underscores the urgent need for new materials to capture, sequester, and reuse CO2, thereby mitigating climate change impacts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great promise in meeting this need due to their structural and chemical versatility. However, most MOFs designed for selective carbon capture suffer from reduced uptake or structural instability in humid conditions, limiting their industrial applicability. In this talk, I will present our efforts to move beyond these limitations by redefining how CO2 capture is achieved at the molecular level. Rather than optimizing existing paradigms, we introduce a unique strategy: the spatial decoupling of CO2 and H2O within the MOF structure, where each molecule is directed to distinct, non-competing adsorption environments. This design principle, rooted in precise control of pore chemistry and host–guest interactions, enables selective CO2 capture even under highly humid conditions. This approach enabled us to discover a new class of MOFs that exhibit exceptional performance, stability, and durability in capturing CO2 from challenging environments, including wet flue gas streams and ultra-dilute concentrations representative of direct air capture. These findings not only address a longstanding limitation in the field but also establish a new design paradigm for next-generation carbon capture materials, bringing us closer to scalable and impactful climate solutions.[1-7]

Biography:

Kyriakos Stylianou earned his Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry from the University of Liverpool, UK. Following his doctoral studies, he was awarded the prestigious Marie Curie Individual Fellowship, which supported his postdoctoral research at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Barcelona, Spain. In 2015, he joined the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland as a team leader, where he launched his independent research career. In 2019, he was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at Oregon State University and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2024. He currently directs the Materials Discovery Laboratory (MaD Lab), where his research focuses on the design and synthesis of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications in carbon capture and separation, hydrogen generation, water purification, and other environmental technologies.

Currently serving as journalist-inresidence at the AI Now Institute, Merchant has been The Los Angeles Times’ tech columnist, an editor at Motherboard, VICE’s science and technology publication, and the founder of Terraform, its online fiction site. He also established Automaton, a project that examined the human impact of AI and automation, for Gizmodo. Vin Yin yoga includes a slow yoga flow, yin postures, pranayama, & guided meditation. Postures will move from the floor to hands-and-knees to standing and feature a gentle and slow flow between yoga postures, followed by a sequence of yin postures that are held for a few minutes to release connective tissues and promote deeper relaxation in the body. This drop-in style class is suitable for most ability levels, and a range of props will or can be utilized to support and adapt the practice. Our final concert of the season features the world premiere of “Songs of Judith,” choral music as resistance, a newly composed work in recognition of our 25th year, by internationally recognized composer Melissa Dunphy. The work sets the story of Judith, as set in the Old English dramatic poem. The new work is accompanied by Thomas Tallis’ “Spem in Alium,” a towering 40-voice polychoral motet, "A Vision Unfolding," a work rooted in themes of compassion, freedom, inclusivity, and justice, by Kyle Pederson, and “Luminous Night of the Soul,” a shimmering ode to the resilience of the human spirit, by Ola Gjeilo.

Join the Corvallis Repertory Singers as they celebrate their 25th anniversary and journey into the past and back to the future. Starting with their roots with a concert devoted to Bach and Mozart, then to the upper regions of Norway, using color, sound, and video to bring the listeners a northern lights experience, and finally back in time to experience the drama of the story of Judith.

The Fairbanks Gallery of Art at Oregon State University is pleased to present Vehicles, an exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Josh Callaghan. The exhibition centers on two newly completed sculptures, Big Rig and Death Drive (both 2026), alongside a selection of works spanning the last decade. These include Callaghan’s shoe mandala, Wormhole, Left (2023), a series of toolbox assemblages, Twig Indexes (2022-24), and a modified refrigerator, Monument to World Peace (2017). Taken together, Vehicles functions as a focused survey of an artist whose practice has long orbited the altered found object as an instrument of cultural critique, humor and poetics.

The exhibition’s centerpieces are two large-scale sculptures: a semi-truck and a covered wagon, each constructed using wheelchairs as their chassis. The collision of forms is immediate and loaded. Wheelchairs—objects already dense with associations of disability, health, healthcare, vulnerability, and mortality—are recast as icons of American mobility. The covered wagon conjures the ideology of Manifest Destiny; the semi-truck, the infrastructure of contemporary commercial life. Posed together, Big Rig and Death Drive trace something like a compressed arc of modern American movement.

Wormhole, Left, Callaghan’s shoe mandala, is a wall-mounted arrangement of found shoes organized by size, from infant to absurdly large adult, suggesting an evolutionary sequence - a lifetime captured in a moment. Callaghan’s Twig Index’s stage a quieter tension: found toolboxes filled not with tools but with meticulously arranged twigs. The gesture is comic and melancholic in equal measure, a parody of the human impulse to categorize, systematize, and domesticate a nature that ultimately refuses containment. The tools have been stripped of their function; what remains is the taxonomy itself, the grid of incremental human logic imposed on material that exceeds it. In the context of Vehicles, these works rhyme with the wagon and the truck: each is an artifact of a civilization that mistakes its systems of order for mastery.

A recurring formal preoccupation runs through the exhibition beneath its conceptual surface: tubes. The wheelchair frames, shower grab bars repurposed as exhaust pipes, and oxygen tanks all return to a fascination Callaghan has traced across his practice for years. Tubes and cylinders are, he notes, evocative of the body itself: fingers, limbs, the infrastructure of a human form. In Vehicles, they also become conduits—for movement, for meaning, for the passage of time. The title holds this openness deliberately. A vehicle is a thing that carries: bodies, cargo, history, ideas. Callaghan’s objects do all of these things at once, and invite the viewer to sit with the weight of what they haul.

Improving pedestrian safety continues to be critically important to the Oregon Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) mission to provide a safe and reliable multimodal transportation system. This research provides ODOT with refined tools to improve pedestrian safety at signalized intersections by developing enhanced guidance on when and where to implement Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI) either solely or in conjunction with complementary treatments such as Curb Extensions (CE). The guidance was informed by four major tasks: a literature review, a conflict-based field study, a driving simulator study, and development of an LPI suitability assessment tool. This research found that CEs decrease vehicle turning speed and shift conflicts from high/medium to low severity. For conflicts involving speed, both CEs and LPIs reduced conflicts, with the addition of the CE providing additional conflict reduction. The findings from this research support ODOT’s Strategic Action Plan as well as ODOT design and practice documents.

Topic: Measuring tidal flows to support estuarine restoration using infrared quantitative image velocimetry

The Herring River Estuary at Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts was diked over a century ago, severely restricting tidal exchange with dramatic ecological and biogeochemical consequences in this ecosystem's former salt marshes. A $60 million federal restoration project is underway to replace this dike with adjustable tide gates, enabling controlled reintroduction of tidal inundation. During construction of these tide gates, a winter storm's large waves in Cape Cod Bay breached a dune barrier into the upper estuary, creating a secondary channel for seawater to enter the system during high tide overwash events which have accelerated and complicated tidal restoration. During my PhD, I conducted two field campaigns to measure tidal flow through the former dike and the overwash breach using a near-field remote sensing method called infrared quantitative image velocimetry (IR-QIV). This method uses an infrared camera to derive a surface velocity field by tracking subtle thermal patterns on the surface of flowing water. My research leverages IR-QIV measurements of coastal hydrodynamics to derive rating curves for tidal flow rate and invert bathymetry in tidal channels, with direct applications to ongoing restoration efforts in the Herring River Estuary.

Brett Gadsden is Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University and a historian of twentieth-century United States and African American history. His first book, Between North and South: Delaware, Desegregation, and the Myth of American Sectionalism (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012), chronicles the three-decades-long struggle over segregated schooling in Delaware, a key border state and important site of civil rights activism, education reform, and white reaction. He is the recipient of fellowships and grants from the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Studies, Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Sustaining Nuclear Security in a Changing Global Landscape

Over the past 80 years, nuclear deterrence, nonproliferation efforts, and arms control have played key roles in maintaining global security. However, today’s rapidly changing geopolitical environment presents new challenges to these long‑standing efforts. Shifts in alliances, evolving military capabilities, and the ambitions of potential adversaries are placing increased strain on systems and strategies that have helped prevent conflict for decades.

The United States has long focused on maintaining a credible and effective nuclear deterrent while working to limit the spread of nuclear weapons. Today, global conditions continue to change in ways that make it difficult to sustain the successes of these efforts. This talk will outline the major challenges now facing nuclear deterrence, nonproliferation, and arms control, and will highlight current efforts aimed at addressing them and supporting long‑term peace and security.

The College of Liberal Arts, School of History, Philosophy, and Religion, and the School of Writing, Literature, and Film invite all undergraduate students to submit proposals for the Undergraduate Humanities Conference on Friday, May 8, 2026. The event will be held in the Journey Room at the Memorial Union, with a Zoom option available for Ecampus student presenters. This day-long, student-centered conference is your chance to present original humanities scholarship in a welcoming and supportive academic setting.

Any current OSU undergraduate who has completed original work in a humanities course is encouraged to apply. Please submit your paper title and an abstract of no more than 250 words—briefly describing your topic, main argument, and its broader significance—to Monique McDade by April 15, 2026.

The Fairbanks Gallery of Art at Oregon State University is pleased to present Vehicles, an exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Josh Callaghan. The exhibition centers on two newly completed sculptures, Big Rig and Death Drive (both 2026), alongside a selection of works spanning the last decade. These include Callaghan’s shoe mandala, Wormhole, Left (2023), a series of toolbox assemblages, Twig Indexes (2022-24), and a modified refrigerator, Monument to World Peace (2017). Taken together, Vehicles functions as a focused survey of an artist whose practice has long orbited the altered found object as an instrument of cultural critique, humor and poetics.

The exhibition’s centerpieces are two large-scale sculptures: a semi-truck and a covered wagon, each constructed using wheelchairs as their chassis. The collision of forms is immediate and loaded. Wheelchairs—objects already dense with associations of disability, health, healthcare, vulnerability, and mortality—are recast as icons of American mobility. The covered wagon conjures the ideology of Manifest Destiny; the semi-truck, the infrastructure of contemporary commercial life. Posed together, Big Rig and Death Drive trace something like a compressed arc of modern American movement.

Wormhole, Left, Callaghan’s shoe mandala, is a wall-mounted arrangement of found shoes organized by size, from infant to absurdly large adult, suggesting an evolutionary sequence - a lifetime captured in a moment. Callaghan’s Twig Index’s stage a quieter tension: found toolboxes filled not with tools but with meticulously arranged twigs. The gesture is comic and melancholic in equal measure, a parody of the human impulse to categorize, systematize, and domesticate a nature that ultimately refuses containment. The tools have been stripped of their function; what remains is the taxonomy itself, the grid of incremental human logic imposed on material that exceeds it. In the context of Vehicles, these works rhyme with the wagon and the truck: each is an artifact of a civilization that mistakes its systems of order for mastery.

A recurring formal preoccupation runs through the exhibition beneath its conceptual surface: tubes. The wheelchair frames, shower grab bars repurposed as exhaust pipes, and oxygen tanks all return to a fascination Callaghan has traced across his practice for years. Tubes and cylinders are, he notes, evocative of the body itself: fingers, limbs, the infrastructure of a human form. In Vehicles, they also become conduits—for movement, for meaning, for the passage of time. The title holds this openness deliberately. A vehicle is a thing that carries: bodies, cargo, history, ideas. Callaghan’s objects do all of these things at once, and invite the viewer to sit with the weight of what they haul.

At first, thousands, and eventually millions of Latino farm workers were recruited, even more after than during the war. Though the Braceros Program ended in Oregon in 1947, Oregon continues to rely primarily on Latino farm labor to cultivate and harvest the State's agricultural production.
