Jackie Shannon, PhD will be presenting on the Healthy Oregon Project (HOP). The Healthy Oregon Project seeks to learn about the health of people in and around Oregon. The overall goal is to understand the causes of cancer and other diseases in order to save lives. HOP combines surveys on health, wellness, and behavior with the voluntary collection of biological specimens (e.g., saliva). Data are saved to a secure and privacy-protected repository of information that can be used to answer many different questions about health. Dr. Shannon will provide an update on the project’s progress and opportunities for investigators at OSU to access the HOP to support of their own research.

Professor, OHSU/PSU School of Public Health,
Associate Director, Community Outreach and Engagement, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, OHSU School of Medicine,
Associate Director, Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute

Jackie Shannon, PhD, is a professor in the OHSU/PSU School of Public Health. She earned a BS in Nutrition Science from Pennsylvania State University, an MPH in Public Health from University of Minnesota, and a PhD in Nutritional Epidemiology from University of North Carolina with post doc work in Cancer Epidemiology.

Her work begins with consideration of the distribution and determinants of disease at the population level. Dr. Shannon’s diverse training has allowed her to explore many levels of analysis, including the individual-level (dietary intake) and the micro-level (molecular markers, genetic polymorphisms), but always with an intent on population-level application.

The college-wide research seminar series is co-sponsored by the College Research Office; the Hallie Ford Center; the Center for Healthy Aging; the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition and Preventive Health; and the Center for Global Health.

The seminar series provides a forum for faculty in the College and other researchers to present and discuss current research topics in an environment conducive to stimulating research collaboration and fostering student learning. Faculty and students from other colleges, research centers, and institutions are encouraged to participate.
