Title: Advancing Software Engineering Excellence in Scientific Software Development
Abstract: Many scientific software development teams experience challenges in their development practices that can adversely impact the team’s productivity, the sustainability of their software, and the reliability of their scientific results. Even when such challenges are recognized, teams may not see a way to improve the situation, or may consider potential solutions to be too expensive or onerous. In this talk, software engineering researcher Reed Milewicz will provide guidance based on his published research and first-hand experience on how to develop robust software that can keep pace with evolving scientific objectives. We will discuss the fundamentals of software quality, how that quality influences reproducibility and other desirable properties of research software, and strategies for improving software development processes to ensure those outcomes. Topics of discussion will include the Productivity and Sustainability Improvement Planning (PSIP) toolkit, a lightweight set of practices and resources for software process improvement originally developed for use within the US Exascale Computing Project, as well as the presenter's ongoing research into software quality practices for engineering reproducible software.
Bio: Reed M. Milewicz Ph.D., is a computer scientist and software engineering researcher in the Department of Software Engineering and Research at Sandia National Laboratories, where he is the research lead. His research focuses on developing better practices, processes, and tools to improve software development in the scientific domain. This is a course of research that straddles the line between systems and human factors, ranging from technologies such as compilers and formal verification tools to direct engagement with software teams through evidence-based software process improvement. His current work includes being PI of Engineering Common Model Framework (ECMF) project at Sandia which aims to develop infrastructures for archiving and sustaining computational science and engineering models, and usability lead for the DARPA PROVERS evaluation program which seeks to improve the usability and efficacy of formal methods tools in high-consequence software development contexts.
