Dr. Karen Kelsky is the Founder and President of The Professor Is In, which provides advice and consulting services on the academic job search and all elements of the academic and post-academic career. She speaks nationally and internationally on topics related to Ph.D. professionalization, and is a weekly columnist at Chronicle Vitae.
Focusing on stressors such as the lack of tenure track or other specialized jobs, the struggle to navigate adjuncting, postdocs, and other temporary positions, crushing levels of graduate school debt, mental health challenges, and a pervasive miasma of denial about the real conditions of employment in the current era, Dr. Kelsky illuminates the spots of greatest unspoken confusion for graduate students confronting the job search, and the places where faculty advisors can make the most meaningful impact. Dr. Kelsky also supplies some suggested approaches for the "hard conversations" that need to happen for advisors to effectively mentor their advisees - both to compete effectively on the academic job market, and also to provide the genuine support they so desperately need to consider non-academic options and trajectories.
By the end, advisors will have a better sense of the anxieties their advisees may be hesitant to share openly, and modes for broaching those with a combination of directness and compassion.
Lunch included.
