Friday, March 3, 2023 12pm
About this Event
170 SW Waldo Place, Corvallis, OR 97331
The Sistema de Alerta Sísmica Mexicano is the world's oldest public earthquake early warning system. This talk by the author of the new book, ¡Alerta! Engineering on Shakey Ground (forthcoming in 2023 MIT Press), draws on over a decade of ethnographic and archival research to analyze a Mexican effort to change relationships between the environment, society, and technology. This talk will interrogate engineering approaches to engaging with the extended technologies, places, and politics that early warnings rely on and frames questions about what environmental monitoring and risk mitigation technology might do for those who build and maintain it.
Free, open to all. Live and on Zoom.
