DESCRIPTION:"Cardiovascular Mathematics: Data\, (Reduced) Models and Clinic
s"\n\nby Alessandro Veneziani from Emory University in STAG 113\n\nLink to
AMC seminar. Zoom link is provided to those on the email list. \n\nAbstrac
t\n\n“Cardiovascular mathematics” is a term introduced years ago to denote
the set of mathematical and numerical modeling techniques to specifically a
ddress cardio-vascular diseases. Beyond the intrinsic speculative interest\
, one of the privileges of working in this area is the close contact with m
edical doctors and clinicians in what we can call “Clinical Cardiovascular
Mathematics” (CMM). The potential - and sometimes\, the actual - role of ri
gorous mathematical and numerical modeling in clinical practice significant
ly increases the appeal of this work. This talk addresses some of the lesso
ns learned working closely with clinicians on specific cardiovascular probl
ems.\n\nBio\n\nAlessandro Veneziani is a Professor of Mathematics and Compu
ter Science at Emory University since 2015. He was previously an Assistant
Professor at the University of Verona\, IT (1997-2000)\, at the Poiltecnico
di Milano\, IT (2000-2002)\, Associate Professor at the Politecnico di Mil
ano\, IT (2002-2007) and at Emory University (2007-2014). Since 2017 he is
also the CSO of an Emory Start-Up called COVANOS. He has a Master in Electr
onic Engineering and a PhD in Applied Mathematics. He has been working on m
athematical models for Cardiovascular Problems since 1994. He published 99
peer-reviewed papers\, co-edited two research books\, and coauthored a text
book on the numerical solution of Partial Differential Equations. He was th
e recipient of the Outstanding Paper Prize in 2004 (with A. Quarteroni and
P. Zunino) and of the Sacchi Landriani International Prize for his work in
Numerical PDEs in 2007.
