Baile folklórico, "folkloric dance" in Spanish, also known as ballet folklórico, is a type of traditional cultural dance originating from Mexico and pioneered by Amalia Hernandez in the 1950's with her establishment of Ballet Folklorico Mexico. The dance style emphasizes folk culture and indigenous dance with elements of Western ballet, tap, modern dance techniques. Elaborate, colorful costumes are an important element of the dance style, which varies slightly from region to region, with similarities in basic steps.
Ballet Folklórico South Texas College began when the college transitioned the Mexican American Studies Program into its Center for Mexican American Studies, under the administration of STC Assistant Chair of the History Department and Coordinator of CMAS Victor Gomez. The group is internationally recognized and has toured nationally and internationally, including performing in festivals all over Mexico.
Ballet Folklórico of South Texas College will perform two programs on June 5: a short demonstration program in the Memorial Union Quad at noon, and a full evening program at Corvallis High School Theatre.
