Breeding Hazelnuts Resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight
Dr. Shawn Mehlenbacher
OSU Horticulture
Shawn Mehlenbacher is a professor in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University, where he runs the OSU Hazelnut Breeding and Genetics program. The program develops new cultivars for Oregon's hazelnut industry, with an emphasis on resistance to eastern filbert blight (EFB) and suitability for the kernel market. He has released several EFB-resistant hazelnut varieties that are now being planted extensively throughout the Willamette Valley, allowing for expanded production of this iconic Oregon crop in the face of threats by EFB. Associated genetic studies include diversifying genetic sources of resistance (both qualitative and quantitative); developing markers for use in the breeding program; and fine-mapping, cloning, and molecular investigations of disease resistance genes and pollen-stigma incompatibility genes.
