Corvallis Science Pub presents:
Prem G. Mathew, PhD, CFA
Associate Dean for Undergraduate Student Development
Director, Center for Advancing Financial Education (CAFE)
Associate Professor of Finance
Description: Oregon State University’s Center for Advancing Financial Education (CAFE), housed in the College of Business, is a one-stop financial wellness center supporting the OSU community and beyond. From one-on-one advising around paying for college and budgeting to basic financial planning to free tax preparation services through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, we seek to provide equitable access to financial education and support services.
In this talk, I will discuss what it means to be financially literate; the differences across demographics around financial literacy; how these differences lead to sub-optimal financial behavior and practices; and CAFE’s role in reducing these cross-demographic disparities. The talk will be informed by data collected and analyses conducted around Oregon’s inaugural Financial Wellness Scorecard, to be released by the Oregon State Treasurer’s Office Financial Empowerment Advisory Team.
