Eric Smoodin, professor of film studies at UC Davis, joins us for a lecture on a classic horror film.

“Women came out trembling, men exhausted.” That’s how one reviewer described the effect of Frankenstein at its 1931 opening in New York City. But the Hollywood studio that produced the film, Universal, lived up to its name by having an international audience in mind. I will assess the impact of this canonical horror film on diverse groups of viewers in places as disparate as Kansas City, Berlin, London, and Paris, and examine some of the relationships between cinema, journalism, public relations, government, and the movie-going public.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments provided.
