DESCRIPTION:Dr. José Cortez\, Associate Professor and Director of Latinx S
tudies at the University of Oregon\, joins us for our spring Critical Ques
tions lecture.\n\nU.S. immigration policy along the southwestern border is
deadly. Since 1994\, the US Border Patrol has used a strategy known as
“Prevention through Deterrence\,” which militarized urban border cross
ings and forced undocumented migrants to cross through dangerous terrain l
ike the Sonoran Desert\, often with tragic results. In this presentation\,
Professor Cortez will read through the cultural fallout of Prevention Thr
ough Deterrence and share how Latinx artists have developed sites of misun
derstanding that generate new political questions in times of disappearanc
 e. \n\nRefreshments provided. Accommodation requests related to a disabili
ty can be made by contacting Molly McFerran\, 541-737-3244 or molly.mcferr
