 Vivian Choi\, associate professor of sociology and anthropology at St. Ola
 f College\, will be presenting from her book Disaster Nationalism: Tsunami
  and Civil War in Sri Lanka (Duke University Press 2025). \n\nThe talk is 
 co-sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts’ marine studies program and 
 the School of Language\, Culture\, and Society.\n\nIn Disaster Nationalism
 \, Vivian Choi examines how the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami fostered new for
 ms of governance and militarization during Sri Lanka’s decades-long civi
 l war that led to enduring forms of precarity and insecurity. Tracing the 
 development of disaster management projects following the tsunami\, Choi d
 emonstrates how these projects rest on a logic that treats natural disaste
 rs and terrorism as inevitable risks in need of management. The tsunami’
 s destruction foreclosed the possibility of political resolution to the wa
 r\, as the state leveraged these projects to justify its militarized aggre
 ssion in the war against the Tamil Tigers and a new construction of the Sr
 i Lankan nation. Choi reveals how\, paradoxically\, state-sponsored disast
 er management projects—from new buffer and border zones to early warning
  systems—created more insecurity. Choi amplifies the experiences of thos
 e affected by the tsunami\, particularly Tamil and Muslim communities. In 
 so doing\, Choi shows how life perseveres against perpetual uncertainty an
 d danger—caused by natural disasters and state-sanctioned violence alike
