This work examines the decline of a friendship between two businessmen, one an American Jew and the other a German expatriate who falls under the spell of Nazism after he returns to Germany. The plot unfolds through letters exchanged between the two men. For more than eight decades, audiences have been absorbed by the message of this novel and by how that message is conveyed. Address Unknown was first published in 1938, as a short novel by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor. Taylor’s novel – the source of the dramatic reading on April 20 – has gone through several printings, appearing in twenty languages. It was produced as a Hollywood film in 1944.

In the OSU performance, the roles of the two businessmen will be taken by Dr. Jonathan Katz, a professor emeritus of history, and by Dr. Neil Davison, professor in the School of Writing, Literature and Film (whose course offerings include one on the Holocaust in literature and film). The director of Address Unknown is Dr. Charlotte Headrick, who has an emeritus appointment in Theatre Arts; her association with OSU extends back to 1982, and over the years she has directed a number of plays that have been staged during HMW, as well as teaching a Holocaust and Theatre class.

At Oregon State University, we have observed Holocaust Memorial Week every year since 1987. The breadth and the duration of our effort are unmatched in the Pacific Northwest. This program grows from the belief that educational institutions can do much to combat prejudice of all kinds, and to foster respect for the diversity that is America, by promoting an awareness of the Holocaust, perhaps the most horrific historical indicator of the high cost of prejudice. It is particularly important to teach young people about the Holocaust, so that coming generations will not forget the lessons that a preceding one learned at such cost. This emphasis recalls the motto of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: "For the dead and the living, we must bear witness."  Learn more about all events at https://holocaust.oregonstate.edu/
