A work-in-progress talk by Dr. Steven Ortiz.
Steven Ortiz, guest editor of the forthcoming volume Emergent Sociological Issues in Family and Sport, will discuss his work collecting international research that addresses issues like support for female and LGBTIQ+ athletes, the impact on young athletes of overinvolved parents, and physical and mental health, from the combined perspective of family studies and sociology of sport. Steven M. Ortiz holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and is Associate Professor in the Sociology Program at Oregon State University, where he specializes in qualitative research and teaches Social Psychology, Sociology of Intimate Relationships, Sociology of Sport, and Collective Behavior. He is the author of The Sport Marriage: Women Who Make It Work (University of Illinois Press), and his research has appeared in journals including Symbolic Interaction, Sociology of Sport Journal, Sociological Perspectives, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Qualitative Inquiry, and American Sociologist, as well as in the edited volumes At the Heart of Work and Family: Engaging the Ideas of Arlie Hochschild and Studies in Symbolic Interaction.
