DESCRIPTION:Sean Brosig\, Electrical Engineer\nUSACE - Hydroelectric Design
Center\n\nAbstract\nHydropower is the primary source of electricity in th
e Northwest and continues to be a reliable source of electrical power\, pr
oviding voltage support and improving grid stability\, in the region and a
round the world. The experience of working in this industry has proven int
eresting and engaging in the speaker's experience\, and has provided many
lessons and opportunity for growth - both technically and professionally.
This talk will provide an overview of the hydroelectric generators\, as we
ll as a deeper dive into their design and a sampling of projects and devel
opments. Additionally\, a number of lessons learned and ideas to consider
for current students of any technical discipline will be discussed.\n\nSpe
aker Bio\nSean Brosig is an Electrical Engineer working in the Generation
Equipment Section at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Hydroelectri
c Design Center (HDC). His areas of expertise include generator rehabilita
tions\, generator capability studies\, excitation system replacements and
design\, and modeling of generation equipment. He has placed particular em
phasis on the development of design tools and programs to assist in the pe
rformance of design calculations and model development\, as well as knowle
dge management initiatives. Before joining USACE\, Sean completed his Bach
elors of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at
Oregon State University in 2011\, and his Masters of Science in EECS with
the Energy Systems group in 2013.
