The 'omics prism: a multi-faceted lens into the evolutionary ecology of cetaceans

The ‘omics’ fields (genomics, transcriptomics, microbiomics, metabolomics, etc.) are experiencing a period of rapid expansion. With the continuous development of new technologies and novel applications, marine mammal researchers are constantly pushing the boundaries of exploration and learning using ‘omics approaches. In this seminar we’ll look at some of the latest developments in ‘omics technologies, and explore the ways they are being applied by marine mammal scientists to address timely questions relevant to the conservation and management of cetaceans. The integration of multiple ‘omics techniques to improve our understanding of the evolutionary ecology of marine mammals offers unique opportunities to address previously intractable questions for some of the most elusive large mammals.
