Dr. Mónica Izurieta Guevara
Professor - Health School at Universidad UTE - Quito, Ecuador
Ph.D. in Health, Environment and Society.
My main interest is in food studies in Latin America. My research focuses on the political economy of food and the intersection of food economics, health, and the environment
I have coordinated and contributed to initiatives such as the Seminar on Food Studies in Latin America in Mexico City and the TWAS-TYAN Hands-on Schools Programme in La Paz, Bolivia, which focused on agro-innovation and resilience. I have also collaborated with Oregon State University on the Faculty-Led Programme on Food, Biodiversity and Culture in Ecuador. These experiences have strengthened my ability to work in multicultural environments, facilitate dialogue among diverse stakeholders, and manage projects with a regional scope.
I served as Programme Coordinator of the “Andina Ecosaludable” initiative (2018–2022) in Ecuador, leading the implementation of projects that promoted agroecology, food sovereignty, and intercultural health. This role involved coordinating with local communities, academic institutions, NGOs, and public entities, as well as overseeing Project planning, execution, and monitoring. More recently, I worked as a consultant on food systems and market dynamics in the Metropolitan Municipality of Quito.
