Igneous Petrology Beyond Our Solar System: Exoplanets and the Hunt for Life
Thousands of rocky exoplanets have now been identified outside our solar system and knowledge of their geologic characteristics such as composition, mineralogy, surface recycling mechanisms, and volcanic behavior, are key to determining their suitability to host life. Thus, determining exoplanet habitability requires applying methods from the field of igneous petrology. This talk explores recent work in the fields of igneous petrology and exoplanet science, including the determination of exoplanetary mantle compositions, mineralogy, and melting behavior and the prevalence of exoplanetary magma oceans.
