Health Workers’ Strike and its Impact on COVID-19 in Kenya

At least 30 doctors, 34 nurses, and 10 clinical officers in Kenya have died after contracting COVID-19. To date, more than 2,000 Kenyan healthcare workers have contracted the deadly virus. The strike of healthcare was called for and is ongoing from December 2020 in Kenya. What is the implication?
In his talk, Dr. Patrick Opiyo Owili will discuss the background and motivations of Kenyan healthcare workers’ strike and related ethical and public policy issues.
Dr. Patrick Opiyo Owili is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Health at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB) in Kenya, where he teaches and mentor students in two Masters Programs (MSc. in Global Health and Master of Public Health). He is in the editorial board of four journals and has co-written several books and published widely in peer-reviewed journals. He is also a certified publons academy peer reviewer who has peer-reviewed for a number of journals. Patrick is a Licensed Lead Expert of the Environmental Impact/Audit Assessment with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in Kenya. He holds two Ph.D. degrees from the National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) in Taipei, Taiwan—with his first Ph.D. being on Public Health, while the second is in the area of Environmental Science and Technology with special emphasis on Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. His research interests span from Global Health Issues, Health Services Research, Health Systems, Quality of Care, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health to the Effects of Air Pollution.
