Topic: Exploring the largest submarine eruption on Earth: A trip to Fani Maoré (Indian Ocean)
In May 2019, an oceanographic expedition conducted offshore Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean) unveiled a new active submarine volcano, Fani Maoré. To date, this new volcano has erupted more than 6.5 km3 of lavas with various morphologies, making it the largest submarine eruption ever documented. In this talk, I discuss how we can use lava flow morphology as a proxy to understand the dynamics of submarine eruptions. I use a combination of high-resolution bathymetry, optical imagery from submarines, and 3D reconstructions of seafloor outcrops. This multi-scale approach allows us to document the fine-scale morphologies and eruptive processes associated with the eruption and to constrain the precise chronology and spatial variability of lava emplacement. The ultimate goal is to better understand the processes involved in submarine volcanism while bringing up clues to estimate hazards associated with potential new volcanic activity.
