Topic: Monitoring the ocean at the speed of light: New applications of Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing
Abstract: Distributed Fiber-optic Sensing (DFoS) is emerging as a powerful tool for observing a wide range of submarine processes in unprecedented detail. A single instrument attached to one end of a fiber-optic cable, such as a seafloor telecom cable, can continuously record nanoscale cable strain and temperature with meter-scale measurement spacing over 10s of kilometers at kHz frequencies. These fiber-optic methods provide significant improvements in the spatial and temporal density of in-situ data collection. However, it can be challenging to convert DFoS measurements to relevant geophysical parameters (e.g., pressure, ground movement). In this seminar, I will provide a brief overview of applications for DFoS and discuss recent advances at OSU. We are using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) for quantitatively measuring ocean surface gravity waves and nearshore sandbar migration. Data will be presented from field experiments in Duck, North Carolina and Rockaway Beach, Oregon.
