DESCRIPTION:Speaker:Miriah M. Russo Kelly\, Associate Professor\, Departmen
t of the Environment\, Geography & Marine Sciences\, Southern Connecticut
State University \n\nTopic: The Ocean Identity Initiative is a collaborati
ve research agenda developed in response to calls within the UN Ocean Deca
de to “restore society’s relationship with the ocean” and strengthen
society-ocean connections. In response to this global priority\, and in c
onsideration of ocean program needs\, the Initiative advances Ocean Identi
ty (OI) as a novel construct for examining how individuals engage with\, e
xperience\, and understand ocean environments through the lens of human id
entity. Drawing on interdisciplinary foundations in environmental psycholo
 gy\, identity theory\, place connectedness\, and marine social science\, t
his research conceptualizes OI as a multidimensional construct encompassin
g the cognitive\, emotional\, and behavioral dimensions of individuals’
relationships with the ocean. This presentation will highlight existing an
d ongoing Ocean Identity research projects\, introduce emerging research f
indings and tools\, and identify opportunities for collaboration across di
sciplines and sectors. Resources and approaches with potential application
 s for ocean-focused programs\, initiatives\, and interventions will also b
e shared. The presentation will conclude by exploring future directions fo
r Ocean Identity research and its potential to advance understanding of hu
man-ocean relationships\, strengthen the social science foundations of oce
an sustainability\, and foster greater collaboration across ocean research
 \, policy\, education\, and practice.
