Topic: A multiscale approach to understanding fish responses to environmental change in California ecosystems
Predicting organism responses to environmental change is challenging, particularly in aquatic and marine ecosystems. Here I present three case studies to demonstrate how these responses can vary across scales, from physiology to behavior to species distribution. To do so, I examine fish species found in California, including salmon and their common predators, and two different sharks (sevengill and basking sharks). I demonstrate the value of using data collected at different resolutions to better predict fish responses to various environmental variables. Ultimately, these approaches could be used to inform more proactive conservation strategies, in California and elsewhere. Finally, I will conclude with a brief introduction to my postdoctoral research on salmon sharks and Chinook salmon in the Pacific Northwest.
