Topic: Communicating with the Public: Honing your story for table top exhibits, fairs, and talks
Engaging, interactive, temporary table top activities for public science events such as fairs, open houses, and career days are part of the standard toolbox for communicating the results and processes of scientific research. Done well, these short activities can generate interest in your work, provide access to current research, reveal aspects of the nature of science often hidden in news reports or other media, and help learners create new conceptual connections. But what makes for a high-quality, engaging public table top activity? Our work at the HMSC Visitors Center as well as research done with audiences around the world shows that activities that are multimodal, multisided, multi-outcome, non-linear, layered, scaffolded, and authentic promote learning among both individuals and groups to a greater extent than exhibits that are not. Dr. Rowe will describe what each of these learner-friendly components looks like in practice and discuss examples of how researchers can easily build these features into their own public communication work.
