DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Roxanne Beltran\, Assistant Professor\, Ecology & Evol
utionary Biology\, University of California Santa Cruz\n\nTopic: Open ocea
n ecology shapes life history evolution in long-lived mammals\n\n \n\nMari
ne mammals undertake some of the most extraordinary migrations on the plan
et to eat and avoid being eaten. They make behavioral decisions based on t
he ecology of their prey and predators\, all while keeping within the conf
ines of their physiological limits. I will discuss how our lab group expl
ores predator-prey interactions in the open ocean by attaching electronic
instruments to seals and monitoring their vital rates with mark-recapture
 techniques.
