Speaker: Greg Cermak, NASA Ambassador
Topic: Earth Impact: the threat of Near-Earth Objects
Near-Earth Objects are comets and asteroids orbiting near Earth. Some of these objects cross Earth’s orbit posing an impact threat. A meteorite is a meteor that reaches the surface of the Earth without burning up entirely and may have local or global impacts depending on its size. How are meteorites detected, what are the risk and what can be done if impact is imminent? In this presentation we will look at the recent Chelyabinsk event over Russia in 2013 and the historical Chicxulub event near the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 60 million years ago. Learn about an ex-baggage handler that has successfully predicted two meteorite events and explore National Aeronautic Space Administration (NASA) and European Space Agency (ESA) strategies for tracking and deflecting potential meteorites.
