HMSC Science on Tap- Walking the Docks, Virtually

Speaker: Angee Doerr, Extension Marine Fisheries Specialist, Oregon Sea Grant

Topic: Walking the Docks, Virtually

Commercial fishing is at the heart, culturally and geographically, of Newport, OR. You can feel the excitement in the air when Dungeness crab season starts, and many people have their favorite spots to go out and catch their own clams, crabs, and salmon. But did you know commercial fishing brought in nearly $56 million in ex-vessel revenue (the money paid directly to fishermen for the value of their catch) in Newport, OR in 2019? Did you know Oregon has the longest-running certified sustainable shrimp fishery in the world? Do you know why hagfish is also called ‘slime eel’, or why they produce so much slime? Come learn about the variety of fishing that takes place right off the local docks, and get a virtual tour of our own working waterfront.
