Speaker: Katherina Audley, Whales of Guerrero, Barra de Potosí, Mexico
Topic: Saved by the Whales: How the Discovery of a Whale Nursery Transformed a Community
In 2013, a group of fishermen, teachers and scientists discovered an important breeding and calving ground for humpback whales in Guerrero, Southwest Pacific Mexico and followed them back to their feeding grounds along the West Coast of North America. The next decade of research about this group of whales not only brought forth new understanding about humpback whale population dynamics, it also connected a community so deeply with whales that they began making important steps to restore their local ocean. Come feed or spark your whale fever with a glimpse of whales courting, battling and at play and learn more about the fun, exciting lives of whales and the people who study them.
