Professor Tsutomu Kitajima, from Kyorin University, will present "Toward improving access to HIV testing and treatment among non-Japanese residents in Japan."

This talk is based on a study conducted as a part of the research project titled "Improving access to HIV testing and treatment among non-Japanese," which was funded by the Ministry of Health. This research addressed the concern of non-Japanese residents’ access to HIV tests and treatment. The survey informed us that there were unmet needs for accessing HIV testing among international students in Japan. We negotiated with a public health center and HIV testing center in Tokyo to make the service more accessible to non-Japanese, especially for those who have low proficiency in Japanese and English. For this purpose, we organized a training program for medical interpreters about HIV and TB during the last two years. We then assessed the effectiveness of the training program.

This is one of several events during Professor Tsutomu Kitajima’s two-day visit. Professor Kitajima from Kyorin University is visiting Oregon State on November 15 and 16. During his visit, he will present his research and hold two open forums. Kyorin University has been a partner of the CPHHS Center for Global Health since 2014.
