Improving adolescent and maternal health in the Gambia and Ghana through Gender Transformative Approach (GTA)

With funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Society for the Study of Women’s Health (SSWH) is partnering with the Agency for the Development of Women (ADWAC) and Youth Harvest Foundation Ghana, to implement a 3-year project titled, "Shifting gender norms for improved maternal and adolescent health in the Gambia and Ghana." The overall aim of this gender-transformative implementation research project is to study the effectiveness of training healthcare providers and male partners/husbands on gender transformative approaches to improve adolescent and maternal health in The Gambia and Ghana.
Dr. Mat Lowe was the former adjunct lecturer of population and development at the University of the Gambia, and is now the director of research and programs at the SSWH in the Gambia. His work spans a wide range of social and cultural factors affecting maternal and child health in the Gambia; health systems research and human resource for health workforce in the West Africa region. Currently, he is leading a five-year implementation research project addressing teen pregnancy and early marriage in the Gambia, which is being funded by Canada’s IDRC and implemented by the SSWH and ADWAC. Dr. Mat Lowe holds a Ph.D. in Global Health from the Institute of Health Policy and Management of National Taiwan University.
