DESCRIPTION:This talk will provide an overview of research in OSU's Robotic
 s and Human\nControl Systems Lab directed by Prof. Balasubramanian. Prof.\
 nBalasubramanian's work seeks to simultaneously draw inspiration from the\
 nhuman body's control system to advance robotic systems and to use robotic
 \nsystems to understand the human body and improve quality of life. This\n
 viewpoint spawns many unique research questions across domains. In this\nt
 alk\, Prof. Balasubramanian will highlight ongoing research work in\nrobot
 ics-inspired passive implant design for orthopedic surgery for\nre-enginee
 ring the mechanics of movement and force transmission from\nwithin the bod
 y\, focussing on their benefits and challenges.\n\n \n\nProf. Ravi Balasub
 ramanian is an Associate Professor in the\nCollaborative Robotics and Inte
 lligent Systems (CoRIS)\nInstitute and the School of Mechanical\, Industri
 al\, and\nManufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University\n(OSU). He 
 directs the Robotics and Human Control Systems\nLaboratory at OSU. Born in
  India\, Prof. Balasubramanian\nreceived his B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineer
 ing from the\nNational University of Singapore with top honors and his\nPh
 D from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon\nUniversity. He did a pos
 t-doctoral fellowship at the\nUniversity of Washington in computational ne
 uroscience and\nbiomechanics\, was a researcher at Intel Labs Seattle in\n
 personal robotics\, and then was a research scientist at Yale\nUniversity.
  Prof. Balasubramanian has received the NSF\nCAREER grant and the Congress
 ionally Directed Medical\nResearch Program Neuromusculoskeletal Injuries R
 esearch\nAward\, among other honors.
