Dr. Drew Harvell, Professor, Cornell University will present a seminar entitled "Turning Up the Heat on Ocean Outbreaks from Seagrasses to Seastars." The Harvell Lab studies infectious disease outbreaks of foundation and keystone species in the ocean. The lab's current focus is on tracking spread and impact of wasting disease of eelgras from San Diego to Alaska. Dr. Harvell's book, Ocean Outbreak, investigates four major marine disease epidemics, how the consequent changes reverberate through the interactions of the ocean organisms themselves and even come back to threaten our livelihood and health. Her first book, A Sea of Glass, won a National Outdoor Book Award for Natural History Literature, a Rachel Carson Environmental Literature Award and was one of 2016's best "Art Meets Science" books by Smithsonian Magazine.
