"Shirley inherited the love for plants.”
As a young child, Shirley wanted to be outside helping with yard work instead of the house chores! Her maternal grandmother was known as "Carrot Grandma" due to her love for gardening and growing flowers and vegetables to share with family and friends.
FAST FORWARD. Retirement from the public schools in 2011, Shirley had time to tinker and play with plants. Her colleagues presented her with a $250 check and suggested to her husband that he build her a custom designed greenhouse. Currently there are now two additional portable structures that over-winter cultivars not needing extra heat. Just Christmas lights to keep the air at 42 degrees!
Shirley finds enjoyment in growing a variety of cultivars for the sheer challenge of growing and dividing them. The idea of having a 365-day garden, the chance to make more GREEN, and share them freely with others is a daily routine! Shirley enjoys researching different cultivars and their unique and sometimes challenging characteristics. The IF, How, and When to propagate, recommended methods, and days/years to maturity becomes the exciting focus for trial and error success.
Becoming a Master Gardener in 2012 gave her the science behind her passion. Currently Shirley is involved with four Master Gardener specialist committees. As a Co-Chair for the annual Plant Sale, she coordinates the plant donations and potting parties, and propagates in-excess of 2,000 plants annually. This includes seeding (fall and spring seeds), year around tip cutting of annuals and unique herbaceous plants/shrubs/trees. Last year, native plants were added to the challenge.
"Growing a hibiscus plant from seed has proven to be the most difficult, yet exciting project thus far."
