Abstract

In this talk, you will discover that linguistics and biology share the same mathematical foundations, and algorithms designed in one field can be easily transferred to the other. We will show how algorithms from NLP can be applied to speed up RNA folding.

Bio

Liang Huang is an Assistant Professor at Oregon State University and also serves part-time as a Distinguished Scientist at Baidu Research USA. His research interests include machine learning, computational linguistics, computational biology, and the many connections between these fields. He received his Computer Science PhD in 2008 from the University of Pennsylvania. He has received six ACL/EMNLP best paper awards or nominations and was an invited speaker at ACL 2019. He has graduated four excellent PhD students, one of which went on to be the first author of Google’s ground-breaking Transformer.
