Dolors Escala's The Mystery of the Monotype is an exhibition of engravings inspired by nature and landscape from the artist's abstract perspective.

On display April 3 through May 12, 2023
Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Artist Reception April 20, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

This exhibition shows how the Catalan artist, Dolors Escala, uses the monotype technique to create unique and distinctive engravings, working with form, texture and color as if the print was a painting. From an engraving on a copper plate or iron with acid, she adds tree leaves and other materials to create unique prints that are transferred to paper either by manually rubbing or using a press.

Over the years, Escala has incorporated many different techniques and artistic styles in her artwork. From a very young age she wanted to be a painter, and took private lessons with various painters. Hoever, eventually she found she could not find her own identity in that medium. Later in her life, while attending a school of textile design in Barcelona, a professor suggested that she explore the art of engraving.

Today she continues to experiment with different forms, colors and materials in her engaging personal style. Most of her engravings are printed on hand made paper form the famous "Museum of Paper" in her hometown of Capellades, near Barcelona.

In 2022, Escala was a finalist at the prestigious Mini Print International at Taller Galeria Fort in Cadeques, Spain, which included 610 artists from different parts of the world. Also, last year, she had two, one-person exhibits in Catalunya -- one of them at "LaTossa," a pre-Romanic church from the 10th century.
