The Mid-Willamette Valley’s premier literary event, The Magic Barrel: A Reading to Fight Hunger, will be held on Friday evening, October 19, at the Whiteside Theatre. Doors to the Whiteside open at 6:00 p.m. and the event begins at 7:00 p.m. The Magic Barrel is held each fall in Corvallis to raise funds for Linn Benton Food Share. Tickets are $12 and available on the Magic Barrel website (or $15 cash at the door).
The evening will begin and end with music, beer, and wine, and then the audience will enjoy readings by Oregon novelists, poets, short story writers, and nonfiction writers. Courtesy of Grass Roots Books & Music, the authors’ autographed books will be available for purchase at the event. All proceeds from beverage and book sales will be generously donated to Linn Benton Food Share.
Author Jon Raymond will emcee this year’s event. Readers will include José Angel Araguz, Nick Dybek, Omar El Akkad, John Larison, Dionisia Morales, Chad Murphy, Elena Passarello, Sam Roxas-Chua, Mary Szybist, and Leni Zumas. This year’s musical guest is the Perkins, Bliss, Brassfield, & Pfender Quartet.
This unique event, which began in 1993, is named after Bernard Malamud’s short story collection, The Magic Barrel. The event's premier sponsor is OSU's Center for the Humanities, and Spring Creek Project is a supporting co-sponsor.
