DESCRIPTION:Black histories of medicine\, health\, and disability in the Un
 ited States illuminate the effects of racism on Black bodies and lifes\, o
 ften specifically related to Black women's sexual\, reproductive\, and mat
 ernal health care. Antebellum enslaved midwives maintained African-derived
  cultural practices in providing both spiritual and health care. Despite t
 heir sustained and holistic care work for enslaved and free people for gen
 erations\, Black midwives have been largely overlooked as key figures in A
 frican American history. Centering the Black midwife in U.S. and African A
 merican history uniquely reveals the co-constitutive nature of racism\, se
 xism\, classism\, and ableism\, and their collective influences on African
  American lives and culture\,. The history of the Black midwife demonstrat
 es societal apathy toward Black women by its collective treatment of midwi
 ves and the overwhelming disregard for Black and other marginalized women'
 s access to qualitiy reproductive and maternal care. K. Mar Morgan is a Bl
 ack feminist historian who studies African American expeirences with medic
 ine\, disabilitiy\, and acces to care. Morgan earned her Ph.D. in American
  Studies with concentrations in History and African American Studies from 
 Purdue University and is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the U
 niversity of Alabama and serves on its Task Force Studying Race\, Slavery\
 , and Civil Rights.
