TITLE: Embedded System Design for Real-Time Readout of TDR-based Stretchable Strain Sensors

ABSTRACT: Stretchable electronics are important for advancements in soft robotics, allowing for more real-time adjustments in actuation and control. In this work, we demonstrate a modular system for real-time length measurement via time-domain reflectometry. The system consists of custom electronics interfacing with a stretchable liquid metal wire strain sensor across the length acting as a transmission line, and an on-board CMOS-based time-to-digital converter (TDC) measuring the time of flight of a generated pulse across the line to determine length. Powered via USB, the system does not require bulky and expensive external power supplies or clocks to operate the TDC, making it portable and effective for real-time on-the-go data collection. We present details on the custom board design, optimizing readout and averaging for real time data processing, and results of the testing with both rigid transmission line boards and with the stretchable strain sensors.
