Drawing out ideas for epic road trip adventures for most people starts off with simple web searches with collating valuable information scattered all over the internet in travel blogs and guides, along with route planning with maps and/or navigation apps which can be a cumbersome process. It would be helpful if there was one single place where budding road adventurers could choose from a multitude of options, thoughtfully designed by seasoned road-trippers, right at their fingertips. This drives the requirement for a community-powered platform where users can explore road trips made by other people like them, creating new ones of their own and having integration with a trustworthy navigation tool. To achieve this idea, this master’s project presents Trippr. A platform that lets users explore and save popular road trips created by other community members, helps plan and explore road trips faster, as well as making navigation of road trips quick and easy. A controlled lab study assessment found that users spent ~2.5 minutes on average finding an appealing road trip using Trippr as compared to an average of ~8 minutes by trying to find a road trip by any other means. The assessment also found users spending ~30 seconds trying to access their favorite road trip on Google Maps using Trippr whereas they spent ~2.5 minutes pulling up their manually created road trip plan and plugging in the routes on Google Maps. These promising results suggest that Trippr could serve as an innovative platform to help plan and execute road trips while having the best possible travel experiences.
