OSU Music Alumnus Jade Hails returns to campus to perform on the Music à la Carte Concert Series.
Hails' program features transcriptions of hallmark composers including Bach and Piazzolla, juxtaposed against the seemingly avant-garde works of theatrical percussion by de Mey and Aperghis. Does Bach have to be performed on a baroque instrument? Can a piece involving only gestures and no instrument be considered as a moving piece of music? What connection is formed when a performer speaks at, but never to, an audience? Percussion music has a wide range of performed repertoire, and by putting audiences through the gauntlet of some of the most challenging percussion music, percussionists offer exposure to a new world of musical possibilities. Performed music is not only sound, it is gesture, it is drama, it is philosophy.
This intra-disciplinary recital takes the concepts of music and its adjacent arts and examines them independently. The live audience is open to Oregon State University students, faculty and staff only. Those from off of campus are invited to watch the livestream at https://youtu.be/LbJJCShNj34
Vancouver, Washingon-based Percussionist Jade Hails is a dynamic presence on and off stage. Combining theatrics and technical performance in a musical amalgamation, Hails has committed his career to bridging the gap between the arts, offering his skillset to other artists in ways that utilize their work, curating collaborations based on poetry and literature as well as visual art and dance.
Hails is currently a faculty member of Lane Community College as well as at various private lessons schools throughout Vancouver where he teaches percussion technique, performance, and music entrepreneurship for both schools.
As a former member of Left Edge Percussion -- the resident chamber percussion ensemble for the Oregon Center for the Arts directed by Dr. Terry Longshore -- Hails was invited to New York for the 2020 Bang on a Can LONGPLAY Festival. He was also a judge in the 2020 Left Edge Percussion Composition Competition, selecting a work from over 80 submissions to be performed by the ensemble. These and many other collaborations paved the way for Hails’ passion for expanding art and branching out to cooperate with different disciplines of artists.
In his pursuit of interdisciplinary cohesion, Hails joined forces with the Italian-born Pianist Letizia Pent, to form Pas de Duo. A melding of the traditional and the contemporary, Pas de Duo arranges, adapts, and commissions works with the intent to accompany classical and modern dance performers, further bridging the gap between the arts. This, combined with Hails’ compositions and commissioning efforts, display his true creative outlet and passions.
Jade Hails graduated from Southern Oregon University with a Master in Music, where he studied with Dr. Terry Longshore. He also holds the Bachelor of Arts in music from Oregon State University where he studied with Dr. Robert Brudvig. Hails has also studied with Alan Keown and Matthew Keown.
