#defenseNick Tatalovich, Professional Science Master's student in the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program will defend his thesis "Stewardship at Breitenbush: Environmental Resource Assessment and Footprint Analysis at Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat and Conference Center" on May 25th, from 1-3pm in Wilkinson 203. Abstract: This report provides an assessment and classification of environmental data that Breitenbush Hot Springs has compiled over 30 years which can used as a baseline reference for future projects and help guide future environmentally conscience business and management decisions. A site review was also conducted specifically to identify and map the locations of potentially sensitive freshwater resources adjacent to ongoing or planned development sites. Spatially locating these features can help provide guidance on management of these resources and restoration efforts as needed. A focus on Breitenbush’s institutional practices includes an evaluation of data necessary to calculate a Nitrogen Footprint, summary of Breitenbush’s business practices, marketing strategies, management, and finances, and how the research conducted for this project will affect their business decisions. The primary conclusions and recommendations for Breitenbush are: to begin to implement environmental assessments during the project and development planning phases, to conduct a thorough inventory of their natural resources and potential impacts, and to collect data related to their institutional Nitrogen as well as Carbon Footprints.
