About Pilot JoePilot Joe was the first phase of the Middle Applegate Dry Forest Restoration project, one of three such demonstration projects in SW Oregon designated by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in 2011 that were based on the dry forest restoration principles developed by Drs. Jerry Franklin and K. Norman Johnson. Pilot Joe included a timber sale, non-commercial thinning, and prescribed underburning. Implementation began in fall 2011.
MonitoringA team was developed and a monitoring plan created under the auspices of the Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative (SOFRC). Pre- and post-implementation monitoring was carried out from 2011-14. In fall 2017, 5-year post-treatment data were collected for the timber sale units.
About the tourWe will visit several commercial and non-commercial units to discuss pre- and post-treatment conditions and 5 year results. This includes such indicators as tree size and vigor, mortality, stand density, overstory and understory species composition, snags and down wood, spatial heterogeneity, and fuels and fire behavior.
