 University of Southern California\n\nThis is a two part talk. Part one is 
 a general discussion of intellectual property\, and of useful ways to thin
 k about it\, when developing a new technology. The focus is on patents and
  trade secrets. The second part is about a rapidly developing area of law:
  allocating the risks posed by robotic autonomous systems. The emphasis is
  on potential physical harms\, with autonomous vehicles serving as an exam
 ple. Attendees will hopefully leave this talk with a better appreciation o
 f when these issues might become important\, and a framework for seeking a
 ssistance.\n\nBased in the Portland\, OR area\, Jonathan Kaplan runs his o
 wn intellectual property law firm. Before starting an independent practice
 \, Mr. Kaplan was a partner with a large top-tier law firm. He obtained hi
 s law degree from New York University in 1992\, and a Master’s\, in elec
 trical engineering and computer science\, from the Massachusetts Institute
  of Technology in 1989\, where his research included work at the AI lab as
  well as the Research Laboratory of Electronics. In his 26+ year career as
  an IP attorney\, Mr. Kaplan has gained experience with a broad range of t
 echnologies\, including: robotics\, artificial intelligence\, mixed-signal
  integrated circuits\, neuron-level person-machine interfaces\, software t
 ools for integrated circuit design or manufacture\, natural language proce
 ssing\, and computer networks.
