Presenter Burke Hales, College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.
Persistently energetic waves and close access to capable ports and oceanographic and engineering expertise make Oregon’s coastal ocean an ideal place to test the untapped potential of wave energy. Oregon State University operates one test site near Newport for autonomous wave-energy conversion testing, and is developing a second site for grid-connected utility-scale device testing as the final validation for technology before it enters the commercial marketplace. Current design and site assessment work is underway for this second site, and renewed operations are planned for the first site in 2019. The monitoring, permitting, and development will be discussed, as will some descriptions of potential technology deployed at the two sites.
