Science on Tap: Is it environmentally responsible to eat fish?

Speaker:  Trevor Branch, School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington, HMSC 2018-2019 Student Invited Speaker

Topic: Is it enviromentally responsible to eat fish?

Are fisheries sustainable? Should we even eat fish anymore? Overfishing is rampant! Rockfish are recovering! Climate change reduces fish catch! There is no wonder that the public is confused about the status of ocean fisheries when multiple competing narratives vie for attention on the front pages of newspapers, and indeed the state of fisheries science is in a similar state of flux. In this talk I will cover some of the major issues confronting marine fisheries, touch on the global status of fisheries, and explain what kinds of fish you can responsibly eat.
