The Department of Speech Communication Colloquium Series presents Dr. Yanni Ma's research presentation titled "Knowing Better, Persuading Smarter: Why CLimate Change Communication Fails."
For decades, we have used a variety of strategies in communicating climate change. One of the most prevalent strategies asks scientists and communicators to deliver scientific facts to the public. However, providing these scientific facts can produce boomerang effects that cause climate change communication to backfire. This presentation presents two quantitative studies grounded in motivated reasoning theory and social identity theory that examine different explanations as to why this backfiring occurs.
