Jerald Walker is an essayist and author of four books, including How to Make a Slave and Other Essays (2020) and his most recent Magically Black and Other Essays (2024), both finalists for the National Book Award. His writing has appeared in The Harvard Review, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Iowa Review, and has been anthologized multiple times in The Best American Essays series. He is a Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing and African American Literature at Emerson College.
