“What do we owe our political rivals? Charity or chastening?” - A Discourse Event
Wednesday, November 20, 2024 4pm to 6pm
About this Event
Our current political climate forces us to encounter positions that may be uncomfortable or even troubling. Whether we identify as a democrat, republican, or other political affiliation, the issues we encounter publicly have major implications for the world we live in.
Join the College of Business Discourse Program as we ask the question: “What do we owe our political rivals? Charity or chastening?”
This community dialogue session will feature brief presentations, small-group discussions, and independent reflections analyzing two alternatives for how we engage with our political rivals.
The first view recognizes that the issues we encounter in the current political milieu have a deep, existential significance capable of impacting us and our loved ones. Our deepest held beliefs about human rights, identities and practices, and ways of life are at stake. We do not have the luxury to treat politics like a game when so much is on the line. The best metaphor for the political space is a battlefield where our goal is to vanquish our rivals through any means possible.
The second view holds that we are all in this together. The political world provided by a democratic society is one where we need to work together to ensure that every view is heard and every actor is given the space to present their opinions and have a voice, without fear of physical, interpersonal, or social retaliation. This view holds that we can disagree about major political positions while still maintaining friendships and mutual respect.
Austin Hall 390 November 20th from 4-6pm
The College of Business will host a post-event reception with food, beverages, and lively conversations in the Atrium. We look forward to seeing you there!
